Clark Gable's Ears

With 113 replies and 3,877 views (at the time of this post), the Anne Hathaway’s Eyes thread has produced a wide array of interesting eyes.

Although he got plenty of ribbing and joking done about his ears, Clark Gable (as seen in these shots and especially this one) may not hold any special place when compared to others.

This thread is to examine (in pictures please) reasonable competitors for the distinction of “noteworthy” ears.

Do your worst!

Stephen Colbert (the right one sticks out, just at the top, in an odd way).

Mr. Spock

There’s always this movie star

must is be film stars? Prince Charles has some doozies… http://www.godfreydykes.info/PRINCE%20CHARLES%20TAKEN%20IN%201977.jpg

By no means is this thread limited to film stars! And it’s not just for BIG ears, either.

Noteworthy is the keyword. Clark Gable is just a come-on!

I always wondered about this picture but after I saw some childhood and boyhood pictures of LBJ it became clear to me that he had a thing about his ears.

BTW, if somebody else want to kick off a thread on lips, noses, hair or teeth, be my guest. Other body parts, too.

Relief pitcher Don Mossi had quite the pair of ears, although that shouldn’t detract from appreciation of his overall ugliness.

That’s way too much Alfred E Neuman for me!

Will Smith and Barack Obama.

I’ve thought of starting one about visible acne/facial scarring and about how male actors with it still get gigs and can be considered hot, but I don’t remember any women with it. I look forward to being contradicted.

Bing Crosby

Alison Stewart, former TV/now radio host

Charlotte Church, Welsh singing star

Patricia Heaton has some sizable windflaps, as does Ric Ocasek. I notice these kinds of things all the time as apparently does Zeldar. Fun!

I’ve looked at dozens of photos of Frank Sinatra, trying to find one where the damaged ear is plainly visible. One version of the story is that the forceps used to deliver the largish baby actually tore one off and it had to be sewn (poorly) back on. There are shots of him in movies where the scar is obvious, but the stills and publicity shots manage to mask it well by showing the other ear, or a hat or something. Some even show him tugging at the bad one.

Has anybody seen any big name star with smaller ears than Brad Pitt?

Christopher Eccleston’s somewhat alien appearance doesn’t seem to have held him back.

Not a contradiction so much as a question. Unless we rely on those “shitty plastic surgery before and after” sites for candids without makeup, how will we know about the women and girls with such flaws? I recall some pretty horrid shots of people like Cher and Goldie and Cameron with all sorts of blemishes and scars and such. But once they’re “ready for their close-up, Mr. DeMille” the spackling and paint goes on by the tub.

I’m not even suggesting that the guys don’t get the same sort of touch-up fix-up in their publicity stills and screen close-ups. (Have you seen Hugh Laurie’s hair?) But you are right about the guys being slightly less vain about the acne and rough skin.

I propose a separate thread for some pictures of both genders culled from such sites and presented for the amusement and nausea of all.

There’s that line in Dumbo where Timothy says, “Lots of people with big ears are famous!” I understand that this referred to Clark Gable.

But that’s what I mean, I guess. Women have to hide it but men don’t? Or men can’t because it would look too girly, too made up?

Sorry for the tangent!

For actors of both sexes, wearing makeup isn’t mere vanity, it’s part of the job.

The only thing I’ve ever found amusing about such sites is noting that most of the pictures look no worse than candid photos of most people. Heck, some of the supposedly shocking celebrity pictures I’ve seen still look better than most people on good days.

I’ve looked through many pictures of Robert Vaughn and this is about as good a one as I could locate to show that Vaughn rivals Brad Pitt for small ears. I remember in the Man From U.N.C.L.E. days how I was always conscious of how his ears were way smaller than almost anybody’s.

(This is just to point out that BIG ears are not all that it takes for them to be “noteworthy.”)
