Classical Music search

I’m looking for a particular piece of music, and I don’t know its name, so maybe you can help me. I just need a midi file of it.

It’s a classical piece, played on, I believe, the guitar only. And it goes like this:

ding. da-ding. da-ding. da-ding. da-ding. da-ding. da-ding…

Very slow, kind of reminds me of a spring thaw, sort of a solemn quiet piece. I hope my ridiculous verbal description can help in the search!

Thanky thanky…

When you say ‘da-ding.da-ding’ etc. do you mean that’s it the same notes repeated over and over or just the same rhythm? Is it even the same rhythm or does it change a little? If it’s different notes, could you try and describe how it goes up and down.

(If it’s the same notes, the 10 or so possible melodies that could fit would be easy to create, but I guess you want more than just the opening phrase in any case …)

Okay. Each da-ding is a different note.

low, and mid, and low, and high, and mid, and low, and lower, and high, and mid… etc.

It’s a famous piece. I think it was on Sesame Street with the spring thaw imagery, hence my own connection to that.

It might be the 2nd movement (Andante Largo) of the Concerto in D for Guitar and Strings by Antonio Vivaldi. It’s slow and very delicate but majestic in a way.

No, I don’t think that’s it. Not that I can find a copy anywhere to really tell. It’s unlikely to be a concerto, I don’t think. It’s almost a solo piece.

Not that I know how the terms really apply…

It’s the Largo from the Vivaldi Guitar Concerto. Gotta be. I’ve got a nickel that says this is what you’re looking for.

Well?

Doggone! That’s the fellow!

Well, thanks guys and gals, you was right.

Though that sample was awful short…

I second mack. I remember that particular segment from Sesame Street, one of my first introductions to classical music.

Unfortunately, my sound card is shot so I cannot play some of the samples on amazon.com, but search for Antonio Vivaldi’s Lute (Chamber) Concerto, for lute (or guitar), 2 violins & continuo in D major, RV 93. Listen to the second movement (Largo): I believe this is the one you want. A few modest examples:

Mmmmmmmm. Christopher Parkening - Sample #2

Paul Odette - #11

(By the way, the RV # is short for Ryom Verzeichnis: Peter Ryom catalogued Vivaldi’s works – there were others, but his catalogue of Vivaldi’s works is the most widely used.)
Good gravy, DDG beat me to it again!

Mack and I willl both be impossible to live with, from now on.

(There’s a limit to how much Vivaldi you can cram into a midi file. Go down to your local public library and check out the whole thing on CD or tape. It’s a very famous guitar piece. Just say “guitar” and “Vivaldi” to the librarian and she’ll take you by your little hand and lead you gently to it.)
