Classmates.com: When did she become a brunette?

In junior high (1967) every girl I knew magically became a blonde. Even the Italian ones. Received an invite from Classmates.com asking if I remembered a particular young lady. Indeed, I did: she was dark and mysterious, totally gorgeous, and a brunette. Except she is now a blonde. I realize that hair color can be changed, and gray turns blonde more subtly than black, but this saddens me. It is like a part of my adolescence has been stolen by Lady Clairol.

That’s the problem with women. You can never know the real ‘them’ with all the beauty products that have been on the market since time began. The only way to truly know is to marry her and watch her closely as she applies various disguises over the years. However, that may not be a good thing. That trophy wife may become a pound puppy fresh out of the shower and who do you complain to then? How do you even know she was a natural brunette? She could have been dying her hair since grade school and only recently decided to keep it real. It is an enigma for the ages.

I’m confused.
In 1967, all the girls you knew magically turned blonde.
Someone contacted you now, some 40 years later - and she’s still a blonde.
This makes you sad. Because at some point (presumably pre-1967) she used to have dark hair. Or brunette. Or black.
But somehow you are wondering when this person, or perhaps girls generically, turned back from blonde to brunette without you noticing.
I’m still confused.

I had dark auburn head that started going gray in junior high. That’s how I became blonde. Or rather, white.

I never have dyed my hair blonde though I did color it for a while in my 20s. I was swimming and my stylist insisted on coloring it to protect it from the chemicals in the water (and the blow-dry afterwards). He made a good call.

But it is a very pretty white now. I just wish people would quit looking at my hair and assuming I qualify for the senior’s discount. I’ve got several years to go before I hit that point.

Ah, old men. Stay classy.

Assume that I never make sense. You will be happier.

Carnut (A car nut, but a chick? Nice mix!), white is nice. See Emmylou Harrison.

I’ve always been a brunette kind of guy myself and would always get miffed when a hot celeb went blonde.

Hmm poll idea…

I think it’s awesome that women can choose any color they want. And can change to suit their whims.

Having said that, a few years ago all of the cute blondes in my office suddenly went dark brunette. Like on the same weekend.

Out of some 100 girls in my class (the “some” is because it varies between 5th and 12th grade), only 4 of us do not color at 43.

  • One is a teacher who has managed to look like an exceptionally lively ex-nun despite not being one since we were 28. Salt’n’pepper hair, she used to be a brown so dark it could be mistaken for black unless there was a raven-black in the same room.
  • One has the same kind of curls as Hermione Granger and reckons that styling is for wusses. Her hair is a mixture of dark brown and white, nowadays with enough white to look more steel-grey than anything else from a distance.
  • Eva (who’s got streaked-blond hair) and I (dark brown) did color in our thirties, but eventually realized that the almost-complete lack of grey hairs meant we’d be saving a lot of work by simply going natural. If I take after my mother I’ll be white by 70, if I take after her mother I’ll start to look grey past 70, if after my other grandma I’ll be looking grey at 70. I’ll see.

Every other one is a blonde now, except the one who went punk in HS and who is raven-black, as she puts it, “just to go against the flow.” Back in our early thirties, most went brunettes, later it was redheads, now it’s blondes. And boy, does bleached salt-and-pepper hair look ratty if you don’t care well for it.

We can also vote, and drive cars!

Yeah, you’re missing the point completely. It is not generally socially accepted for a man to dye his hair (other than his natural color, if he’s fading to gray). If a woman dyes her hair to red/brown/blond/black, no one is going to question her ability to do so.

Exactly.

Back in the day, it was “Does she or doesn’t she? Only her hairdresser knows for sure.” Hair coloring was considered a bit scandalous back then. “Nice girls” didn’t do things like that. Only tramps coloered their hair. Years later, it was “Because I’m worth it.” Suddenly it became an option. These days a woman can say “I think I’ll spend the summer as a blonde”, and no one will bat an eyelash.

But it is also an option for men. Hey, the Billy Idol look is kind of cool.

I don’t know, the OP’s point seems to be that he’s put out that someone he doesn’t even know colored their hair.

Actually, I think it is the OP and Shagnasty who is missing the point. Anyone who has hair is free to dye it whatever color they want. It’s their own hair and doesn’t have to be dyed or left natural to suit anyone else’s opinion.

That said, it is a shame how we judge people by the color of hair on their heads or the lack of hair on their heads.

There’s lots of chicks who are into cars, specifically sports cars. And thanks for liking white. I think it is attractive on a younger face, but most people don’t see past the hair.

Have I told you about the nun I had a crush on? Nuns can be hot, even if you can’t see their hair.

I know a lot of men who dye their hair. Maybe this is just because I’m 21 and my generation does this more. Anyway most of the women I’ve known who have dyed their hair have become redheads, definitely not blondes.

Men my age absolutely don’t dye their hair.

If your beef is with the OP, then why did you quote me? And apparently, you think I’m some sort of sexist. What’s up with that?

Beef? I was only commenting on your comment that women can choose any hair color they want. Bend over, remove stick, look for fight elsewhere.
