You probably have seen those high school photos that flash up on various web sites… do you know this person? These ads are for classmates.com - a company which hooks up high school friends from waaaayy back. Anyway, one of the pictures looks like someone I knew in high school [someone I’m not particularly interested in contacting]. Tonight’s ad has someone who looks exactly like one of my first boyfriends.
Has anyone tried registering on this site? Why? Too many months/years have been torn off that old calendar to make this something I would want to do. Seeing the picture of an old boy friend freaked me out. It would be really creepy to see my picture flashing up there… then again, it would be even freakier if that image started talking to me… I guess I shouldn’t drink that espresso at night when I am really tired.
Anyway, I was curious what you thought about that site…
Uh, I don’t know if you’re getting the idea of the site. It just links people to other people they went to school with who might have lost touch with each other. What’s the big deal? I’m on it…you just go register and it groups you by town and highschool. No big whoop. You don’t send them a picture, I think they just do that to make you think of yearbooks.
I am signed up with that site and another one just like it actually.
Like vogue said, it’s no big deal.
You don’t have to provide any information you don’t want to. If you want to keep your email address descrete (sp?) then sign up for a free one at hotmail or yahoo or whatever.
I did it because I am interested in hearing from some people I have lost touch with.
BTW, I also registered with a high school that I would have gone to but didn’t because my mom died and switched schools. I knew a large percentage of these people dating back to when I was in first grade.
One of the guys I knew in Jr. High School contacted me and it seems (even though he felt he was a big ass back then) as though we have a kinship. He was never mean to me but apologized for coming across as an ass even though he wasn’t.
Anyhow, it was a really cool to hear from him after all these years.
I am also registered with Classmates, for most of the reasons given by TC above. I can add one more - my ten year comes up in 2000 and I was hoping to be found should someone organize a reunion. The only thing I do not like about Classmates is that you cannot get others e-mail or bios without actually paying for it. All you can do for free is post your email and hope some other paying person will write you.
I’ve signed up on classmates.com just for the hell of it. But, to actually keep in touch with my high school class, some folks from my school have setup an alumna web site, and send out monthly or so updates of who’s who. Interestingly, most of the folks on the site seem to be from my class (1991).
Well, I wouldn’t join only because I already know how to contact the people I am interested in (childhood friends).
I did, however, find the website to our high school, kiffa. It’s La Habra Senior High School. I couldn’t get through (why am I not surprised?) - their server was down, I suppose.
Damn, I just realized it’s only 3 more years until my 30th high school reunion.
I’m hard pressed to think of ANYbody from high school that I’d be willing to hear from again. Ever. (OK, there are a handful of exceptions, but one of them is dead and the others know where I went to college. They can always track me down through my university’s web site if they really want to.)
I did it, no biggie. I’ve moved three times since high school (a mere 4 years ago) so it’s helpful for people trying to find me. And you can register for free and see if there’s anyone you want to contact already registered.
I almost started a thread like this a couple of weeks ago. I registered on a high school reunion type site about 2 months ago. I checked back a few weeks later and my best friend from school had registered. We lost touch shortly after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, who is a pilot in the Navy, and last time that I had heard from her (we were about 19 yo) she was living in Japan.
Anyway, I e-mailed her and she e-mailed me back telling me she now lives in Texas but was planning a trip back here (Fla) for her parents wedding anniversary in July.
To make a long story short, we got together two weeks ago and Mr. Golf took us to dinner, then she and I hit the town for a few drinks (she pointed out it was the first time we had ever drank “legally” together). Neither of us had changed much in 17 years and we laughed and laughed just like we did when we were in school. Next thing I knew, it was 12:30 a.m., and I had to go to work the next day, so I took her back to her in-laws house and we promised we would keep in touch from now on.
It was one of the best evenings I have had in years.
I’ve registered there, and one other place I was contacted by a high school classmate that I didn’t know real well, but she recognized my name. We had nothing in common so I left it at “gee, it’s neat to hear from you!” and didn’t pursue it. I also heard from someone who kept themself anonymous, send me vaguely creepy little e-mails referencing things I’d done in high school. It was stalkeresque and I was not amused, though when I sent him a sharp e-mail he admitted his identity. He was a yearbook photographer whom I couldn’t even remember. Wacky.
Hmm, time to go check back, see if any new classmates have registered…
I haven’t paid for it, but I checked in at the high school I went to and the high school I would have gone to if I didn’t get in. Seen people I know, only one classmate I would like to get in touch with (but haven’t because I’m not a paying member so I can’t get his e-mail) but everyone else is a “gee, nice to see you again” kind of thing.
Yep, I registered at classmates.com and highschoolalumni.com. I think it is a GREAT idea!! Of course, I was one of those dorks who absolutely loved high school, so go figure. I have been contacted by several people and have contacted others myself. I don’t live near my hometown anymore, so it is nice to just exchange a couple of e-mails and then leave it at that.
Yeah, I signed up and I also paid for 2 years of membership so I could email everybody in my class who posted. I actually saw a girlfriend from 6th grade on there.
I have to admit my curiousity is now peaked by this thread. But I think I’ll wait to see if the LHHS server ever comes back to life and see if they have an alumni page.
I never want to see the people I went to high school with ever again. They gave me nothing but 7 years of pure HELL. They nearly drove me to suicide more times than I can count.
Yeah, I’ve registered for classmates.com as well as a few other sites. Partly of the reason is because I’m facing my [mumble-mumble]-year reunion next year, so I’ve been poking around the reunion type sites. Fortunately for me the alma mater has an alumni association Web site, so I didn’t really need to sign up if I didn’t want to.
