Cleaning electric stove burners?

If this is in the wrong place, sorry.

Does anyone know of a safe method of cleaning electric stove burners (the coil thingies)? I’m prone to the occasional boil-over or slop-over when stirring.

I just use a damp rag after the burner is cool.

Thanks. For some reason, I had the idea that it’s pretty easy to damage those by cleaning, and I’d really rather not buy the apartment complex some new ones.

They are pretty easy to remove, some just pull out. So you can soak them if needed. They are not delicate. I clean them for my apt complex all the time and I’m pretty rough with them.
