Clear language from the Mods when giving warnings

I’d say that depends entirely on how often you get warnings, doesn’t it?

Regards,
10 years, 0 warnings.

Sorry…sometimes my M’s look like W’s.

The language was clear. Saying something will happen means it will happen. The only time it doesn’t mean that is if you attach a conditional to it.

If I say “We’ll go to a movie after I get home from work” it doesn’t mean I’m considering the possibility of going to a movie. It means I’ve already decided to got to a movie. A conditional would be something like “We’ll go to a movie after I get home from work unless I’m too tired.” Now I’ve described a condition in which it’s possible we might not go to a movie.

“You’ll get a warning” means your warning is on its way; expect its arrival. It doesn’t mean “You’ll get a warning if you do this again.”

People with warnings should have to have a huge W watermarked across all their posts. They should be denied the ability to underline. Their posts should all be in mauve.

I DO have a problem with something in that thread.

There’s an exchange where B&S and XT are engaging in some fairly heated debate, including the questions about “squirrel cum” and such.

In post 32 of that thread, Jonathan Chance says

2 minutes later, he says in post 33

But his posts are successive. JC is the author of both posts 32 and 33. It seems like he’s giving XT a warning for insults, but the insult occurred before his post to knock it off. It comes across to me like he ignored mod instruction, but the infraction was before the mod instruction. After the mod said to stop, there wasn’t an insult, but a warning was issued anyway.

Thank you, sir, may I have another?

You too, may I have another?

Some warnings require no ‘heads up, this is getting warnable’ before being awarded.

Both posts were warnable and I wanted to be clear to all and sundry that both were, indeed, warned. If that requires a bit of redundancy, then it does.

Why not just be super clear like JC was as demonstrated in post 25 by Superdude?

Sometimes what seems “super clear” as you’re typing something isn’t always “super clear” to everyone.

I’m not sure what guarantees you really expect to be in place so that someone is always super clear to all people in all circumstances. We do our best and clarify when there is confusion.

“This is a warning.” seems like it would guarantee that everyone will understand in every circumstance. Or what JC said as quoted by Superdude.

Probably 99% of the time that is basically what is written. Not having an automated script, this time he wrote something different, but that he felt was clear (and others found clear as well). You didn’t and asked about and got it clarified.

I still don’t see what the big problem that needs a fix is.

We all agree clarity is best. Sometimes what seems clear to one person isn’t to another. People get to ask if confused and are entitled to get answers. No one is defending the right to be unclear.

I’m not sure. It’s unclear whether that means one is being issued with the penalty notice called a “warning” or whether one’s just being given a heads-up warning (“I’m warning you”). Maybe the penalty notice “warning” could use a capitalised first letter, as in: “this is a Warning”.

This is a Warning

That should do it!

This is a Warning*.

*I used the Comic Sans font for comic effect and it was in no way intended as a slight on the Mods, who I think do a great job.

Yep, you guys do your best, and it is highly doubtful that you will ever satisfy all of the people all of the time. That’s the nature of the beast.

Thank you, and to all of the mods, for helping to guide this place. I didn’t mean any disrespect with my Thank You May I Have Another comments upthread. In retrospect my intent would have been more clear had I included a  smiley.

No smiley? You better believe that’s a paddlin’.

Hey- no Jr Modding.

The problem with shocking people through their keyboards is that it would just encourage a certain type of poster to keep misbehavin’ … adding W's to their name would be in effect a reward … how many posters would try and have as many as they could? Wouldn’t we all respect the poster with the most W's?

“I must be righter than you, look at how many S's I have by my name”

If it makes you feel better, I promise that if I give you a warning there will be no doubt about it.

There’s a limit to that number, of course. Posters eventually stop receiving warnings, one way or another.

Depends on the voltage.
