Which goes directly to the point that Coulter was speaking to the True Believers about their straw man fantasyland version of the US: The one of white original settlers being overwhelmed by brown recent arrivals or people of otherwise illegitimate provenance who’re of dubious loyalty and no worth as human beings.
I’m a part-time instructor at a local university. I never talk about politics in my class (or really about much of anything outside the subject area), but last night I joked that I was glad my students had chosen to come to class on the last day before the end of the world. I made some crack about the Hunger Games starting soon. Anyway, after class one of my students asked me for help with something and mentioned that he would be voting today for the first time as an American citizen. Apparently this election season was pretty tame compared to what he was used to, having grown up in the Kurdish region of Iraq.
ETA: The guy was absolutely pumped about being eligible to vote. I congratulated him but didn’t ask who he supported.
This election, strangely, feels ***less ***venomous than the 2012 election. 2012 was just old-fashioned hate, both sides hating each other (I mean, the two sides of voters, not their candidates) and the hatred was dialed up to 11. Like Alabama vs. Auburn.
This election has been so weird that the hatred has been replaced by a collective “WTF” from both parties. It’s like an Alabama vs. Auburn game, but in the first quarter suddenly mafia gangs and zoo animals invade the football field and take over the stadium.
“I’m very proud of my children and I’m just looking at them right now as an example you show. But I’m very proud because Don and Eric and Ivanka and you know, to a lesser extent because she just got out of school, out of college, but Tiffany has also been so terrific.”
I was just thinking the other day that probably a larger % of blacks than whites in the US have ancestries that go back at least to the early 1800s. Think of the waves and waved of European immigrants in the lat 1800s and early 1900s.
I voted a little while after posting about this. The fence where she was moving signs around had a number of signs including ones for both Trump and Clinton. So it may be that she was just moving the signs around to make room or something.
I’m sure you are right. There has been very little immigration from Africa (outside of Obama and Trevor Noah) compared to other places.
It gives me a bit of comfort to know that none of my ancestors were here until long after the Civil War.
Unfortunately, based on what’s happened in the past, he’ll probably end up with just a slap on the wrist. He needs some kind of punishment that will deter him from his repeated breaking of the law.
