Clip-on audio monitor for Alzheimer's patient?

cwPartner’s mom (MIL) has Alzheimer’s disease. cwPartner’s dad (FIL) is taking care of her at home. They’re doing OK, but FIL has asked us to find some kind of monitoring tools so that he can leave MIL unattended for brief periods while he makes dinner, etc. FIL wants to be able to hear MIL calling him if she needs to use the bathroom or gets nervous. I’m hoping that someone here will be able direct us to the hardware we need.

FIL wants something like a baby monitor. However, he’d like to be able to attach the microphone to MIL’s clothing so that it stays with her when she is in bed or in the bathroom. FIL also needs to be able to carry the receiver with him as he moves around the house.

A “panic button” device will NOT work. She has no short-term memory, so she won’t remember that she has the panic button. She often does not know what she is looking at, so she may not recognized the button when she sees it.

MIL is very limited in her mobility and she can’t move without considerable assistance. A wander system isn’t needed.

Many thanks to anyone who can help us find what FIL is looking for. Again, the list of specs is:

  • Audio monitoring (video is nice, but not required)
  • Microphone can be attached to clothing
  • Receiver can be carried easily, and doesn’t need to be plugged in (rechargable or battery-powered)

Again, thanks.

An Azden Wireless Pro unit (either end) is about the size of an old school beeper and I am sure there is a non-Japanese knockoff out there that sells for 20 times less. The send unit is meant to clip on clothing but the receive unit, while the same size, is meant to be mounted on a camcorder but is still so small it can be geeked-up easily with just a small embarrassing chrome antenna being the only thing from being what could be a perfect solution. The antenna folds down to a hugging three inches.

Ignore the microphone in favor of the two smaller units:

Ebay for lower prices and possibly knockoffs

Madgolf, that just might do it. I’ll discuss it with FIL. Thanks!
