I agree. It’s obviously not policy, but I think it should be. A request by the OP for a thread to be closed (or deleted) should only be honored in extreme cases. Like if there are legal issues. Once, a poster was facing a trial and posted info that may have incriminated him. Folks pointed out this fact and the OP asked that the thread be deleted. They did, and that was nice of them. But such a courtesy should only be extended for extreme cases IMO. Unless someone is going to get arrested or killed, or harmed physically as a result of a thread, the OP should not be able to get a thread closed or deleted.
The Mods seem to be a little more free with offering this courtesy to OPs, and such is life. I would like it better the other way personally. It’s really not that big of a deal though.

The lesson is, and I want you all to write this down - it’s gonna be on the exam at the end of the semester: When you make generalized and unflattering statements about large groups of people, even if you call it humor, you shouldn’t be surprised if a contingent of that large group of people, and even some individuals from outside that group, find it unfunny and offensive. Further, you should be prepared to take some lumps for your perceived insensitivity.
And for extra credit, keep this in mind: It’s not the moderator’s job to pull your acorns outta the fire - the moderators only step in to quench the fire, should it get out of hand. In this case, I deemed it to be a well-controlled and beneficial burn. Thus I first moved the thread to the Pit and then let it remain open.

I would hope though that “the request of the OP” is not a magic bullet to get out of a mess of your own making. I actually agreed with IDBB and her ilk (though it pains me to admit it), but if people were offended there is no reason she should get a free pass to stop her own thread.
I would expect that if I stir up trouble with an OP that offends people I will need to stick around and face the music. I would not do as IDBB did and ask the thread to be closed just because I don’t like what some people think about it.
Now see…Fruitbat and I could have saved you guys all this trouble…we said the very same thing WAAYYYYY back on Page One of this trainwreck.
