Come on, a different moderator talked about the request, within the thread, and gave good reasons why (Reasons I totally agree with, by the way) a request can be over-riden.

It’s not in the league as some of the shit manhattan has pulled, but it’s getting close. I personally thought better of coldfire than to drop to these sleazy tactics.

I was dissapointed too when I saw it had been closed. We had just gotten into a good discussion. Another mod refused to close it at the OP’s request so it seemed a bit odd that the orginal decision to leave it open would be overrode with no further comment. I wonder if IDBB privately emailed Coldfire and asked. If so, that was pretty lame, since she hadn’t participated in a while on it. Sometimes threads take on a life of their own, and veer away from the original OP. That’s not always a bad thing.
Anyhoo, I’m sure the discussion could continue if another thread was started about it. I’m not sure there’s much to argue about if it was closed at the request of the OP, like I said before, the only really odd thing was having the request denied the first time around.
Uncle Beer’s actual statement was that they don’t close threads simply because someone asks, and that he was leaving it open for a reason. However, he added that the Pit mods (of which Coldfire is one) may have a different opinion.
Naturally, those who moderate a particular forum have more of a say than those who do not and are simply helping out. UB was under no obligation to do diddly; Coldfire simply decided to agree with the OP and close the thread.
Second, “fascinating discussions” have no place in that forum. If a discussion on bigotry was desired, GD would have been more apropos.
He gave reasons why a request can be overridden, but at no point did he say they WILL be overridden. The fact is, moderators are under zero obligation to moderate in forums that aren’t their own; they can lend a hand if need be, but as UB had pointed out, all of 20 minutes had gone by since the request had been made.
I don’t get why you’re so upset about this. Start a new thread if it bothers you that much. The reason given for the closure was that it was requested by the OP, not that the content was inappropriate.
A moderator of the forum in which the thread appeared decided to honor the request of the OP, whereas a moderator of a different forum declined. If there’s a problem here, it’s certainly not with the closure.

He didn’t reopen the old thread, he started a new one expressing his dislike of a mod’s decision, in the correct forum. Coming in here ranting and raving about the stupidity of the OP, (you do like to go directly to the personal attacks, don’t you?) because of some post made early in a 3 page long thread isn’t really doing much for the discussion at hand.
dantheman, I disagree with your statements that facsinating discussions have no place in the Pit. I’ve taken part in and have read many facsinating discussions in here. The Pit is not solely for random insults and complaints. I like participating in discussions when I know I’m not going to be asked for cites to back up every statement I make. You can’t do that in GD. But you can do it here. Many posters are intimidated by GD, and if they choose to get involved in discussions here, then who are you to tell them it’s not allowed?
FWIW when I use the term “White Trash” I mean only how one appears…I don’t really think I or anyone I know who use it use it because it is demeaning of socioeconomic status although I do realize that it used to be that way and may still be some places, but not in the majority. Frankly, there are days I could be decribed as being white trash…

Nope, they have no place there - unless by “fascinating discussions” you’re also including the myriad personal attacks and other screaming matches that usually turn into train wrecks and (believe it or not) are subsquently closed.
That forum is for ranting and raving. If you want ranting and raving, go there. If you want an actual discussion, go to GD, IMHO, or CS. It’s folly to presume that reasonable discussions belong in the Pit.
Believe it or not, there already is a forum here for discussions that don’t (seemingly) require cites every two lines. It’s called IMHO.
Even so, GD is for weighty topics. Bigotry surely fits under that description.
