Coca-Cola to Use Splenda in Diet Coke

Here’s one for the Splenda fans out there: Coca-Cola Co. said today it will launch a version of Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda. The introduction is set for next quarter. Makes no difference to me, as I still drink entirely too much of the sugary version, but it was great news for my Tate & Lyle shares, which rose 7.1% to the highest closing price since July 1998.

That’s great news. To my (admittedly unrefined) palate, Splenda is indistinguishable from sucrose, while Nutrasweet has a much different taste to it. It’s possible with this change that Classic and Diet will have nearly identical flavor, which I would be all for, as I prefer the taste of Classic.

Oh, goodie. I hate aspartame. I can tolderate sucralose. And I’ve been wanting to find something that tastes decent in the way of a diet drink so I can cut a few more calories and still have the occasional soda.

All I can say for Diet Coke is they’re way far behind in this. RC Cola has been doing this for a while now.

That Diet Rite White Grape soda is some addictive stuff let me tell ya.

Yay! I love Splenda! I just hope they don’t do that 1/2 Splenda 1/2 sugar thing that Pepsi did. If I want a diet drink, I want it to have no sugar, not just less sugar.

They did. It’s called “C2”.

Yipeeeee! I am a Splenda lover! I already drink the Diet Rite brands with Splenda in them. Now I’ll be able to drink the Diet Coke brands without fear of getting cancer. I hope they put Splenda in the their Diet Cherry Coke flavor…that stuff is nectar of the Ogs to me.

I like Splenda but I love Diet Coke as it is. I hope they stick with offering two different formulas (unless, of course, it’s really good in which case nevermind!)

I must join in the chorus of approval. I can drink diet soda (I live on diet ginger ale) but some how I never liked diet coke. So when I felt like a coke I went for the sugar version. Be nice to go without it…and I like Splenda. That said…as I like Slenda I’m waiting for the reports that it causes antennas to grow from your eyes and that all the mice they fed it to exploded.

Am I the only one that finds Splenda has less sweetening power per packet than Equal? I like the taste, but if I put 4 packets of Equal into my iced tea, I have to put 6 packets of Splenda into the same size glass so that it tastes as sweet to me. (Yes, I drink very large glasses of tea.) Some kind of genetic thing, maybe?

Ewww, they’ve already rendered my diet Cheerwine undrinkable with that damned swill. Next thing you know they’re going to be ruining diet Dr. Pepper and Diet Pepsi and I won’t be able to drink any diet sodas at all. When will it be enough, Lord? When?

I’ve never noticed that Splenda is any less sweet, but I have noticed that it’s got a very pronounced chemical taste to it. Other artificial sweeteners have an after-taste, but at least the taste while you’re actually eating/drinking is good.

I wonder if this is the right thread in which to mention I kinda liked the taste of Tab?

I don’t know about Equal; I hate the stuff. Compared to real sugar, though, Splenda is sweeter to me. Before my SO was diagnosed with diabetes, we’d put a half a cup of sugar in a gallon of tea but with Splenda it’s a third.

I for one hope they keep both versions available. I like the current Diet Coke enough to run the small risk of mutating.

Do the Splenda sodas give your mouth that coated with sugar feeling? And when you spill them, are they sticky? The "no"s to both of those questions are 2 things I like about Nutrasweet. Aspartame, I’m not real fond of the Orwellian name Nutrasweet…

hijack: If you can, get the liquid Splenda. It doesn’t have the fillers of the powdered Splenda so it doesn’t have any carbohydrates at all.

I hope they keep the regular (ie. aspartame) Diet Coke.

I definitely prefer the taste of Diet Coke over regular Coke. So if Splenda makes the New Diet taste like regular, then I probably won’t like it so much. Regular Coke is far too sweet for my tastes.

Mmm…Tab…that mixture of soap and turpentine that just settles on the palat…gee, wonder why the popularity died out?

As far as the Diet Coke with Splenda…I am a Diet Coke junkie, but I will give the Spenda version a try. However, the reason I like Diet Coke is because it is NOT as sweet as Classic Coke…hell, I even order a Diet Coke with a hot fudge sundae…has nothing really to do with “diet” as much as a less sugary sweet taste to the cola.

Speaking of which, Diet Coke in Germany is wretched. Don’t know what they use over there, but it makes Tab almost taste good. German visitors here have to be tied to their chairs before I can force them to try Diet Coke, but once they do the first thing they say is, “this doesn’t taste like the crap in Germany. This is good!”

Splenda is the best thing since sliced bread. I’ve been drinking the Diet Rite flavors for quite some time. The great thing about Splenda for me is that it doesn’t have a chemical flavor. I’m looking forward to a Splenda version of Diet Coke!

Well, it seems that Splenda is a many-lovered thing!

No change in sweetner will ever make Diet Coke taste like regular Coke. It isn’t meant to. It’s actually meant to taste more like Pepsi. (Tab, IIRC, was meant to taste like Coke, but didn’t because of the saccharine.)
