I don’t know how to do a good rant. I’m just angry and I want to talk about it. Maybe this is MPSIMS. Please move it if it is. Otherwise, here goes.
Last week, approximately 11 days before Christmas (which I do celebrate) our company announced that it would be closing 16 of our 24 offices and laying off several hundred people. This is the 3rd layoff this year and there will probably be another one next month. I might be in this one. Bloodsuckers! The executives that make millions and ruined the company with their lousy decisions get to stay while the people who actually over-work, get all the stress, struggle from paycheck to paycheck, are getting let go. I understand that you have to lay people off sometimes, but they are getting rid of the wrong ones! If they fired 4 executives, they could save 12 to 15 million dollars. Maybe more. And lots of people’s jobs.
I’m so disgusted by this company. I had a downer weekend, wondering if I could actually afford to get gifts, because I don’t know if I’ll have this job in a few weeks. And then there are all the people that I have worked with that I care so much about who have been let go and will be. Some of these people have been with the company 20+ years and there are getting snipped because some jackass in upper management screwed up. Several times. I’m not too worried about me, I’m still (relatively) young, but what about those who have given their lives to the company? AAUUUGGGHH!!! How can you have so little soul to do this to people? How can you have so little brains to do this to the wrong people?
I know the feeling, sorta. My former company went bankrupt. Luckily, I jumped ship in August, and things went downhill in September. However, I’m STILL owed half a month’s salary. There were people who didn’t get paid for August, September, or October.
And the thing is…how could the owners have not KNOWN this was gonna happen? You don’t get THAT much in debt without knowing. If they would have LISTENED to us for once, maybe they could have turned things around. But, same thing happened…hired a lot of top management who weren’t billable, while losing all the people who actually did the work. Grrrr.
At least yer company is still around…I get the fun of figuring out how the HELL I’m gonna get a W-2 in a month. And even if I get a W-2…they didn’t pay payroll taxes. So who knows if I ever really paid anything. sighs
All rants belong in the Pit, Heloise. You’re fine right here.
Although it lacked a certain element of profanity, so necessary for the really grade-A rant, still I’ll give it a 9 for honesty and a 7 for originality, making an overall score of 8.
Sounds like we’re talking A Christmas Carol revisited. Go read it again and picture Your Boss as the Ghost of Marley, dead, gone, and buried, doomed to walk the earth in chains forever, ha ha ha ha ha…
Thanks, DDG. Since I try really hard not to use profanity, I guess I can never get a 10 here, but I’m happy with the 8.
Good luck on getting your money, Falcon. I hope it happens!
So, the really great news is that my boss, one of the bloodsuckers, is going to play Santa at our lunch today! How sick can this company be? We are not getting our normal holiday bonuses, the huge annual celebration has been cancelled, and a Scroogette is playing Santa this year.
I know how you feel. My girlfriend got fired (for political reasons) at the end of October. She foun d another job right away with a great company. Which laid her and 30 other people off last Thursday. It’s always lovely during the holidays, but that seems to be when companies take a look at the way their yearly earnings are going and say, “Oh shit! We best fire some peons!”
I’m not big on sympathy but in this case you have all that I can offer. I have been forced to lay off five of my people in the past month because we are “shifting focus” into new areas. These layoffs were handled with no notice given to those being laid off and strangely enough all people who were laid off were in my department (my group averages a higher salary because we have the most technical intensive field here). The effect this has had on moral in the entire company has been horrible to endure. It was one reason I opted to go to graves. At least at night I don’t have to be around all the misery and fear.
The thing that pisses me off the most about your situation and mine as well, is that these same companies will shit on you unless you provide them with a two week notice before you leave employment yet they can lay you off in ten minutes and they make little effort to hide the fact that those who are getting laid off are at the high end of their group salary scale (at least here that is the case).
If you happen to live in my state (Oregon) and happen to go on a killing spree of those million dollar managers I promise you that if I end up on your jury it will be a “hung jury”.
I hear a lot of stories about mismanagement from my mother and her sister (both work for companies run by idiots), and it makes me wonder what on earth qualifies these people for management positions. They have degrees, but they sometimes lack the heart, sense, and decency to make good decisions.
I’m not sure whether or not I should say I hope you don’t lose your job in the next round of layoffs. Being in that kind of environment can’t be good for you.
Thanks for the best wishes, Audrey, Zen, Primaflora. I’m trying to not be down around the holidays, but it’s like waiting for the axe to fall around here. My ex-boyfriend (but still good friend) found out that he is going to be layed off in Jan. I don’t know who else might be. The east coast people are just joking around and trying to deal with it, but you can tell that it is a strained humor. Our company used to be so strong. Shares were once at 60. There are now under 2. How could this have happened?
