The Ultimate Crumpet recipe
This recipe was developed from a simple recipe which wouldn’t quite work. I needed to find a recipe because I bought a set of crumpet rings, and needed to try them out. A crumpet ring is very similar to an egg ring, but some 3 - 4 times larger in volume, and about twice as thick. (An egg ring produces a very small and delicate crumpet, but not really satisfying for a real bloke.)
Crumpets use a very similiar recipe to muffins (a recipe is attached), except that crumpets are wetter, dry fried and cooked mostly on one side. Actually, crumpets are no more like muffins than bagels are like bread rolls.
So here goes !!!
The recipe
What it takes
450 grams (3 cups) plain white or untreated flour
2 teaspoons (10 grams) dry active yeast
2 3/4 cups of warm water
Optional (1.5 teasopoons bread improver - if you have it available)
1.5 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon of sugar or honey
2 tablespoons powdered milk
1 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
2 tablespoons of warm water
Putting It Together
The Method
Combine yeast, sugar and one cup of warm water into a mixng bowl. The water should be hot enough to take a bath in, but not hot enough to scald. Cover with plastic wrap an stand in a warm place for about ten minutes. During this time the liquid should develop a foamy head, showing that the yeast is dissolved and happy…
Sift flour, milk and salt into another bowl, and mix well. (NB. Please resist the temptation to eliminate the salt, as the yeast need a small amount of salt to do their job properly.) Make a well in the centre of the flour, add the yeasty water and the rest of the warm water.
Using a wooden spoon, mix to a thick batter. Cover with plastic wrap, and stand in a warm place until well risen and bubbly. This will take about an hour. (I find that under the covers of the waterbed, the temperature is absolutely perfect for rising bread dough). The batter doesn’t rise dramatically, but it does expand somewhat, and the mixture takes on gases which are necessary in the cooking process.
Combine the bicarbonate of soda and the extra water, and add this mix to the dough. MIX WELL. Then leave this mixture to stand, covered, in a warm place for a further 15 minutes.
Preheat a heavy based frypan to a low heat. This heat is such that oils (I use a spray on oil like “Pure and Simple”, but butter or margarine may do) will not burn, smoke or misbehave. I use an electric country style frypan set on 5. This is almost a non-stick surface, and so low cholesterol oils are great.
Spray oils also allow you to coat the crumpet rings as you are ready to cook. Place enough mixture into the centre of each ring to come almost to the top of the ring. (The dough does rise during cooking, and this should be allowed for in the filling of the ring. Fill the ring enough to get good rise, but not so much that the ring overflows badly.) Cook for 4-8 minutes over this medium heat, until bubbles appear over the entire surface, and the dough appears ‘dry’.
Remove the ring, turn the crumpet over and cook for a further 30 - 60 seconds to brown the top. Remove from the pan and cool on a cake rack.
If you find that the bottom is too dark (politely referred to as burnt), you are cooking too quickly. Slow it down, relax, and try again. The worst thing that can happen is that you have to make another batch.
Toast the crumpets and serve with lashings of cream and … ENJOY.
Give them a go, they are made along healthy lines, although when eaten with gobs of butter they lose all pretence of health. When eaten with a low fat topping, say like a banana, they are healthy and delicious.

In case you missed it, Coldfire was faaaaar from the only person telling you that you were a jerk. You had something of a point, there. It was the way in which you chose to present same said point that turned (and pissed) people off. There’s a thread elsewhere in the pit railing on PETA (yet again) over their obnoxious “Santa’s not coming this Christmas” campaign, saying that milk leads to hardening of the arteries and impotence. They create a lot of outrage, so people do pay attention to them, but mostly to yell and scream back about how horrible they are. What truth they have in their message is often overlooked in the wake of the outrage. Think about that.

Did anyone actually read the thread and see, that neither margin nor anyone else opposing Andy or ** David Byron actually provided a single link or documentable source of ANY KIND WHATSOEVER??? None. Zip. Zero. Nada. Not one link, not one magazine, not one group, not one political action, not one protest…nothing. They offered approximately three personal anecdotes (I helped a friend in a divorce, I had a discussion in my dance class, and I helped a male employee once) and a lot of “Well I’m married so I don’t want men eliminated,” by some newbies, but not one provided a scintilla of evidence of any sort or a single byte of actual information to back up a thing they said about anything, while simultaneously screaming at others to do so. Is there any reason you left the factor of time elapsed since the abusive situation ended and if the abusive situation was ongoing or not out of your summary? Because I see plenty of difference between Tanookie condeming people who WERE abused and are LATER trying to use that abuse as an excuse for illegal behavior and Tanookie being coerced through the means of an ONGOING abusive situation into committing an illegal act. I believe a claim of “objectively inconsistent” requires proof of different behavior in identical, or equivelant, situations. I believe being coerced into performing an illegal act by threats of further abuse when you are still in the power of the abuser is significantly different from claiming past abuse, with no significant chance of re-occurance, as a justification for illegal behavior.

Can’t make it any clearer than that, I’m afraid. Personal judgment doesn’t enter into it - sure, the “Don’t be a jerk” rule is not carved in stone. It’s deliberately vague: as one can’t quantify it properly anyway, why attempt to do so? The rule serves us well as it is.
And most people know where the line is. Some cross it slightly, and are told to knock it off - and then they do. Some cross it gigantically, and are reprimanded - and they listen. Some keep crossing it knowingly and marginally, and eventually, they get banned. Some are too stupid to realise where the line is, and even too stupid to realise they crossed it 50 miles ago, even though it’s been pointed out to them. The latter category will get banned at some point.
Guess which category you’re in, TVAA?
Which a rather apt description of the only kind of discussion allowed on the Ms. message boards.

Achilles, you’re either insane, a liar, or a guy with terrible taste in friends. Because that bit you quoted was absolutely false. I, for one, provided plenty of cites (often multiple cites in the same post) in that thread.
You may disagree with the quality of cites I provided, disagree that they were relevant, disagree that they were persuasive – but it’s mindbogglingly false to claim that there were no cites.
