Off the college football topic, but still football related…anybody remember back in the day, bars would have a raffle on Monday nights. Whoever won got to throw a brick at the TV when Howard Cosell was on.
I do believe it was you that was counting the four non-con wins plus the egg bowl as your recipe for bowl eligibility. I was merely saying that a win against Alcorn St is a Div I-AA school and a win against them does not count for bowl eligibility.
Kansas State won 6 games last year, but were not eligible for a bowl because two of those wins were against UMass and Tenn Tech.
Most of the schools do it, but I really hate to see the big schools schedule Div I-AA opponents. And yes I realize that the small schools get a nice day to be the “Patsy of the week.” As someone who live in Big 12 country, and dislikes the conference, it gave me a lot pleasure to tell all the Big 12 fans that K-State was in contention for the Big 12 North last year, but were having a hard time becoming bowl eligible because they lost to Louisiana LaFayette.
Well…the Alcorn State game has a lot of political baggage going with it. It probably won’t count for bowl eligibility, but they still may whip our ass. State has no QB. Decent defense, but we could lose 3-0 to pretty much anybody.
The thing with Alcorn State is that school is one of the “Historically Black Colleges”. For years, despite Brown v. Board, they really got the short end of the stick at budget time, and the “white schools” pretended they didn’t exist. Last year a deal was announced where State will play one of the schools every year for the next few years. Jackson State was last year. Alcorn State this year. I think maybe Mississippi Valley State (alma mater of Jerry Rice) next year. Given the history involved, although I love my Bulldogs, and it would be a huge loss, I think maybe the state as a whole comes out to the better if one of those schools can manage a win.
Well It’s make or break for Michigan this year. If they can’t pull off a winning season Rich Rod is gone, and three years out of the spotlight will probably take at least 7 more minimum to recover from recruiting-wise. But if they can pull of 8 wins or so they will be right back in the hunt for next year.
Lots of folks want them to suck so Rich will have to leave. That pisses me off because I simply don’t want them to be bad. Plus There really isn’t anyone out there who I really like for a next coach. Kelly was the only really great one, and now he is gone. So many people I know think Harbaugh is still an automatic to come if we ask him. I just don’t believe it. He actually is one of the best option for coach in the game today, but I just don’t think he is dreaming of coaching the Maize and Blue the way everybody else assumes, I think he is the anti-Lebron. He relishes the challenge of taking a have-not to the promised land, and with USC in prison for two years, he really has a chance to make it happen at Stanford. I think he is staying there for a long time.
Take a look at the “2009-10 college football busts” section on the latter link. Vanderbilt is listed as the biggest bust. That implies that somebody actually had high expectations for Vanderbilt!
Considering their previous season, a bowl visit, that’s not too hard to accept. And having beat Auburn got Tuberville “fired.” Vandy was for a brief shining moment looking good. That sort of thing doesn’t last in the SEC. Vandy is supposed to be on the bottom. It’s such great fun for somebody who grew up knowing that Vandy didn’t have a chance in football, to see them win games against “the big boys.” Bobby Johnson was making that happen every now and then. Now, I fear, the “good old days” will sink below the horizon for a long while.
Miami fan checking in. Even though Randy Shannon got a contract extension this offseason, it took a while to get it. Hopefully he earns it (I’ve been less than thrilled with how things have gone his 1st three years in charge). The early season will be tough: @OSU, @Pitt, and @Clemson by October 3rd. I think the talent is there for a MNC if some things fall into place. Anything less than a BCS bowl will be a failure of a season. He’s had plenty of time to get “his” guys into the program (I think there are no more than 10 guys who were RS-Freshmen under Coker), so that excuse is gone. Coaches who didn’t do the job have been sent packing the last couple offseasons. The depth has had a chance to be rebuilt. Randy Shannon needs to win big now. No more death struggles with Wake Forest. No more losses to UNC. No more showing up and thinking a U on the helmet will win a game.
Outside of my thoughts on Miami, obviously Bama is the class of cfb. I’d have liked to see Oregon make a run, but off-field troubles shot that down. I like UCLA’s chances in the Pac10. Nebraska should be playing Texas for the BigXII Championship. I haven’t followed what’s going on in the BigTen right now.
I’m in OK now, but I’m not a Sooner (went to UofH and CU).
I’m sorry, I’m not buying into these preseason ratings putting OU so high, some even at #1. Stoops is not the god he was in 2000, the QB, Jones, is no Bradford, the O-line looks slow, the D has holes, no stand outs at any position … (imho, ymmv).
The Sooners are likely to be a power this year, but not a contender. I’m looking east.
SEC 6,2
ACC 5,1
Big 10 4,2
Big 12 3,3
Big East 2,0
Pac 10 2,0
MVC 2,1
WAC 1,1
The SEC, and the ACC will probably be the first conferences to lose team out of the top 25. They start playing a conference schedule (and forced losses) earlier than the other conferences.
Unless there’s a miracle game or some stubborn coaches, at least four of these teams will not be in the Top 25 for Week 2, or at least not in their current slot.
You got me! I knew better than to make an obvious (but wrong) statement about such things. However, if past is prologue, there will be quite a few (notice the vague number) who are no longer in the Upper Echelon come Sep/5.
Unless I missed an earlier (in time) loss by a Top 25 team this week, I’m assuming this result will push Pittsburgh out of the list, or closer to the bottom of it:
Wow does Florida look like shit through 35 minutes of this game. If they didn’t have some luck earlier they could be in a serious dogfight with their cupcake.
