Zeldar made me do it. Here is your 2014 general thread for all things college football. I’ll start with a quick recap on the two SEC games from Thursday night:
(1) South Carolina? Damn. That was a systematic beatdown. I’m not quite ready to crown Texas A&M the SEC West champion, but they are definitely on the rise. And considering their weak ass early schedule (this game aside), they are going to be in the Top 10 or so for weeks.
(2) Vandy? Regression to the mean? Or a return to form? Either way, that’s the Vandy I know and love. A 30-point beatdown from Temple? At home? Penn State have to be looking at that and slowly realizing they have one heck of a coach on their hands.
Excited for tomorrow’s showcase games! Clemson v. UGA (Go Dawgs!), Wisconsin v. LSU… and… um…
I kid, I’m also interested in Penn State v. UCF, Arkansas v. Auburn, FSU v. OSU, and Washington v. Hawaii (want to see how Peterson has those Dawgs playing).
Chime in! Before the games! During the games! After the games!
Just happy to be here! Can’t wait for some REAL football tomorrow.
About all I could detect about the Vandy game (never did watch my recording of it) was that they were more impressed with their “anchor down” slogan on their jerseys than they were with playing a decent game.
As for the big upset, I’m hoping Fla State gets a whooping.
And I want Oklahoma to hold onto The Belt for one more week.
I think SCar was way overrated this year. I called A&M to beat them a long time ago, but I did not foresee the epic beatdown that transpired. I don’t think A&M is as good as they looked last night, it was just a perfect storm of a good offense with a QB in the zone against a defense that stunk up the place. A&M is not going to hang 50 points on Alabama, Auburn, LSU, or even Ole Miss and Miss State. They may win a couple of those games, but it will be a lot closer.
The other SEC team that played last night was Ole Miss v Boise State. Three quarters of a snooze-fest, with Ole Miss racking up multiple turnovers, about a thousand false start penalties and losing a linebacker to ejection for a pretty blatant targeting foul. In the 4th quarter, somebody apparently told Bo Wallace to quit throwing the ball to the other team, and he responded big time…torched Boise State for 28 points in 15 minutes.
This weekend, I almost pity Arkansas. Auburn is going to light them up, and may hang 50+ on them in their own stadium.
Alabama may struggle early with West Virginia, but should still win comfortably.
Clemson/Georgia should be a good one. Those teams don’t like each other, and they both have something to prove.
Wisconsin/LSU is interesting. Neutral field, and LSU is starting a new QB. Winner may crack the Top 10, loser will fall several spots…
Before I got waaaay too drunk (don’t even know who won :smack: ), was watching Boise State last night. I’ve been watching them for years. They were always the scrappy little overachievers, way outmatched and undersized to threaten “real teams”. But their record spoke for itself.
HOLY SHIT! What a bunch of HUGE, FAST SUPER ATHLETES! Recruiting Gone Right.
They are going to crush their conference opponents.
So it’s the Cowboys v the “Indians” and you’re rooting for the Cowboys? If they win will you call it the Manifest Destiny Game? :) *
However, I don’t think that will happen today. Jimbo has the boys fired up and the defense (in particular) and the WRs feel like they need to prove themselves to the world. That is not a recipe for an upset.
With that said though, this season terrifies me. Not because I don’t think we’re good, but because we have a HUGE target on our back and we are going to get everybody’s A game. Teams will spend all of their extra prep time on us. Obviously, we can’t do that with all of them. Given the expectations, anything less than a repeat title will be seen as a letdown and it’s only going to take a few key injuries (or to be realistic a few arrests) or an off-night against the wrong team for it to go away in a hurry.
But this team is INSANELY talented and, if focused and healthy, should be able to beat anybody in the country.
Go 'Noles!
For the humor -impaired, this is entirely a joke. I do not think Zeldar is a racist and I certainly don’t think a college football game is a metaphor for the mistreatment of Native Americans during the westward migration of European settlers. It just tickled my funnybone…
Yep, it’s mostly joking, but I do see fairly strong similarities in the skills, attitudes and press frenzy directed toward Jameis that not too long ago were directed at one Mr. Newton. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, sort of thing. For one thing more, the ACC is putting the challenge on the SEC for dominance, and that’s just not right!
Bottom line on the 'Noles: I expect it to be a decent game, but the way things are going it may be anything from a washout to a barn burner.
My team (Ga Tech) starts with 3 cupcakes (at least they are teams they should beat), and then 8 conference games followed by UGA.
GT’s first three games are Wofford, Tulane, Ga Southern. And they will crack the top 25 after those three wins…but I expect another 7-5 season and a berth in a bowl game that no one cares about. like The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
Interesting week for Michigan. A stumble again here could start the whole season down the shitter. I will be interesting to see if we break recent tradition, and a QB actually gets better over a summer rather than worse.
All in all they could end up with a good record without that good of a team, very favorable schedule.
