The omnibus 2008 college football thread

So far it’s been a lot of cupcake matches and a few upsets. Right now in Week 2, Ohio’s making rival Ohio State look way too vulnerable to justify their #3 ranking. Even if State turns things around and wins the game (as I expect will happen), they’re likely to lose some ground in the polls. Gotta love it!

Ooh, East Carolina’s gettin’ it DONE! Halfway through the third and they don’t look like they’ll be folding anytime soon, either!

Love them upsets!

Stick a fork in the Hokie’s BCS ambitions, 'cause they’re DONE!

That was not a bad call at the end of the Wash/BYU game.

If you have watched any games at all this year, the talking heads have gone on and on about the new rule changes. This call has been made several times already in just the first two weeks. Locker had to know that was a flaggable offence. Hell, “throwing the ball high in the air” is specificly mentioned as a violation!

Contrary to what Herbstreet says, he did not “just flick it over his shoulder”. He sailed the ball straight up and out of the camera shot. I never saw it land.

Not saying I agree with the rule, but the call was right on. I said to my wife the second I saw him do it, “That’ll cost him 15 yards”.

Secondly, BYU blocked the kick. Tremendous effort. They deserved the win.

My God. WE…SUCK! :frowning:

At first I had no idea the offense was specifically listed and even as a rival Coug I was disgusted they made such a bullshit call. But learning about it being specifically listed in the rules, I agree, they had no choice.

Gotta say that I feel for you Cougs. You put up a pretty good fight last week though against my Pokes.

Dez Bryant is a beast. 3 TDs through the air and 1 on a PR. I say that OK state is 5-0 and ranked going into our game against Mizzou.

Yeah, crowd was getting on our guy. I was like Jesus, Bryant will likely be playing on Sunday. Our poor guy was a Freshman and gave up 4 inches. WTF did they expect him to do? Send over some damn safety help if he can’t handle him.

Yeah, it’s going to be a LONG YEAR for us. New system, new coach, new QB. They were talking about it on the postgame. We’ve got a roster full of players not recruited for this system. They’re lost, confused, frustrated. Coaches themselves are having to make the change from IAA to D1. I doubt we win a single PAC-10 game this year. Hell, we could easily lose to Baylor at this rate and go 1-11. God, we’re a mess.

Your punter’s really good. Seriously. (OK, that doesn’t help much.)

We’ve got two CFB threads going…I’d love to sustain this throughout the season, so maybe it would be best to merge?

Fine with me. FTR, I checked this forum, plus Cafe Society, before starting this thread.

But what I never heard mentioned by whoever was calling the game, was that the penalty did not cost them the game. The kick was blocked, no matter where the ball was spotted it was not going thorugh the uprights.

I was counting on the Hokies to be ranked when they played my Cornhuskers. This would be our defining game, to show we’re back after the now-forgotten Callahan years.

This week proved one thing: That we have the ability to fight a close game and finally wear down a worthy opponent. Only problem is, that “worthy” opponent was San Jose State. :smack:

Sigh, we still got a way to go.

Agreed. I don’t know how much more difficult/easier to block the kick was than the original spot, but I don’t buy that the call decided the game.

They should shit-can that rule if they don’t like the results. Or coach the player better.

USC 35-3. Wow! I figured USC would roll, but didn’t figure on their defense holding OSU to 3 points. While I’m sure Ohio State missed Wells, he’s not a 29-point turnaround. Besides, the Buckeyes should’ve been able to recruit more than one running back.

Of course, Ohio State will cruise through the Big Ten, causing the media to say how remarkable OSU has “turned things around in a tough conference” (like Michigan last year). Figuring no one will get through the SEC or Big XII unscathed, Ohio State may find themselves back in the title game.

And get slaughtered once again.

I think tOSU may have dragged the entire conference down with them. No one will get credit for beating them, or being beaten by them, in relation to USC.

My Bears stank up the joint against Maryland, but I can take some consolation that there are teams even more embarrassed today:

OSU.
UCLA – WORST LOSS SINCE 1929.
Auburn looked downright ugly in beating So Miss, by the baseball score of 3-2.
Tennessee might have been consoling themselves that losing to UCLA wasn’t so bad…maybe UCLA is a pretty darn good team. Not after yesterday…
Arizona State. One day you’re #15, looking forward to the Showdown in the Desert against Georgia – then you’re getting spanked by a mid-major bottom-dweller.

Oregon? Barely pulled it off. Arizona and Arizona State? :smack:

Yeah, how 'bout that “Pac 9”? Tommy is shouting, "Let me OUT!"

I’m hoping that The Trojans don’t get pulled down too far by the rest of the chumps they have to put a beatdown on in conference. With performances like this weekend, the computer polls might sink them down the road.

[gritted teeth]I rejoice in your glorious victory[/gritted teeth], and hope, if you run the table, that you meet an SEC team in the BCSCG.

Just don’t lose to Stanfurd again.

So, who’s going to be the new coach at Arizona? Mike Stoops is sure to be fired this year.

Tyrone? He’s still got a few programs to burn through!

How about Lane Kiffin?

And yet that same Michigan team beat Florida in the Capital One Bowl.
