Updating my Kentucky Wildcats…

Louisville’s win over K-State last night just made our 27-2 drubbing of “Loserville” even stronger.

With eight consecutive games before the Thanksgiving weekend faceoff with Tennessee, the Wildcats are going to face a pretty tough test. I see wins against Western Kentucky, Vandy and possibly Mississippi State, and definite losses at Florida and at Alabama. Georgia at home is all but a definite loss (had we not upset them at home last time they came, I wouldn’t even call it anything but a loss.)

The real challenges will be South Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee. USC and Arkansas are coming to Commonwealth, so having the crowd behind them should help. Tennessee’s got a 25-game win streak to defend, but at this rate, UT’s going to have empty seats and no support at Neyland, setting the stage for a Kentucky win.

I think there’s a bowl season here if some things shake out (finding a second receiver, getting Hartline’s confidence under center up, the defense staying strong) but they’re going to have to work for it. Barely escaping MTSU didn’t do a lot to encourage me.

I think the world wants to see this game for all the marbles:

Southern Cal vs SEC Champ (Georgia/LSU/Florida/etc)

With apologies to Oklahoma and Missouri. However, with the toughness of the Big XII and SEC (not to mention USC’s annual choke against a lesser Pac 10 team), I do wonder if we’ll have another Big 10 team in the title game?

Last year, we were this close to having Ohio State vs West Virginia in the BCS championship.

I agree…can’t speak for the world, but it sounds good to me. For 5 years, SC and the SEC champ have been like two heavyweights who can’t seem to get in the ring together for the championship bout.

West Virginia loses again! 17-14 to Colorado in overtime!

Anyone think Phil Fulmer at Tennessee is likely to get fired? Florida already winning 7-0 and Tennessee just turned the ball over. If Tennessee loses to Florida after the UCLA loss, it could be a long season for the Vols.

The Vols look just awful (still early, though), and I know the fans online are extremely restless. Wouldn’t be surprised if Fulmer isn’t around much longer, one way or another.

And scratch East Carolina from the BCS Buster category…which is down to Utah & BYU.

The fans in Tennessee in real life have wanted him gone for years. I am shocked he’s still around to be honest.

With Oregon being a mess, it’s looking like the Pac 10 may not have any ranked teams besides USC this week, and that may not change for a while. OSU very well may be unranked at the end of the season if they lose to Wisconsin (50/50 probably) and Penn St (Penn St looks much better than OSU right now). If we have them, a Big 12 and an SEC team going undefeated, with USC having just one top 25 win and the SEC and Big 12 champs having about 5 top 25 wins and one or top 10 wins, do human voters put the two of them in the NCG over USC? Computers will definitely have them over USC, but human votes count more than they did in 2003.

Not that they should, but I think OU would get left out despite the much better resume due to their lack of success in bowl games recently. Missouri may have a better shot, but I really don’t think they will beat OU.

Also, an even more interesting scenario. I expect Florida to win the SEC, but what if LSU goes undefeated along with OU and USC? Both of those teams are currently ranked ahead of LSU. How big of a travesty is it if a reigning champ goes undefeated and gets left out in favor of two teams with weaker SoS?

Getting a little bit ahead of ourselves, aren’t we?

And besides: a defending championship and $5 will get you a mocha frappucino.

When Arizona State beats Georgia tonight, they’ll get back into the rainkings.

You really don’t see a problem with that? Defending champs. Hardest SoS amongst the three teams. Getting left out. It would be a sham even if I weren’t an LSU fan.

You realize college teams change from year to year as players leave? The people doing the voting know who is on the team and who has the stronger players.

It would be nice if USC, LSU, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin all went undefeated.

Maybe that would finally get people to consider a small playoff.

It can’t happen. The SEC has two divisions and a championship game. If Florida won the SEC East and LSU won the SEC West then they’d still play each other in the Conference championship. Now the winner of that game could certainly be excluded from the mythical National Championship game.

But more importantly, the Gators play the Tigers in Gainseville on October 11th, so it’s unlikely that they’ll both be undefeated at the end of the season.

I know that, I was saying I expect Florida to win the SEC, but what if LSU DID win it instead of Florida to bring up the possibility of defending NC going undefeated and getting left out.

Sorry, wasn’t clear to me. LSU will lose to Florida in Gainesville, methinks, so unlikely we’ll get to test your hypothetical.

Also, kind of glad ECU lost today or else there was a good chance that they’d run the table and who knows what that would have led to?

Given how WVU is doing, probably not a NCG threat with ECU.

Hawaii 2008 is what it would lead to.

I think you predicted such just before the season began. I still don’t think we can get through our brutal schedule unscathed, but I never saw a reason why UGA would lose to ASU.

We saw tonight why that was wishful thinking.

Crow is on the menu for breakfast tomorrow.
