College Football 2017

Didn’t see a thread for this season. This is the first big week of the season and it features an epic clash between FSU and Alabama tonight. I"m an FSU alum, so hoping they utterly crush and destroy Alabama.

In other games, an upset alert as Maryland is beating Texas 30-14 in the third. Seeing Texas and Alabama both lose would be perfect.

Go Blue!

There is certainly a disadvantage to scheduling a blockbuster game like FSU vs Alabama for the first game of the year. It’s certainly been some very sloppy football with numerous mistakes on both sides.

Slow start for Sparty but we finally got things rolling. Lewerke looks like a pretty able quarterback and but for a couple turnovers it would have been a rout. Good job by Michigan over the mighty mighty mighty SEC. Michigan’s offense accounted for all but 3 points of the scoring. Good week for the Big Ten, only 2 non-conference losses by hapless Rutgers and a surprisingly good effort by Purdue.

My Dawgs did what Michigan failed to accomplish in 2007 and beat Appalachian State.

Mostly just on the FSU side, unfortunately.

The Cal Bears got the Justin Wilcox Era off to a good start, with a surprising victory over North Carolina. We can play defense!! Who knew??

I’m glad I didn’t stay home to watch the Colossal Titanic Match-up of the Century. Sounds like it was deadly dull.

Bama defense is for real. Offense needs work. Kicker is horrible once again. Still, it was fun to crush Florida State, see them driven before us, and hear the lamentations of their women.

That’s cute. Yes, you won and, yes, your defense is (as always) formidable. But our offensive line stood up to it for a significant portion of the game. And our defense is pretty damn close to yours. Special teams killed us in this game - it was truly the only definable difference-maker. The two teams were only 19 yds apart in total offense.

The take-away for me is that the two best defenses in the country played last night.

Brilliant 34 point 2nd half comeback by UCLA against Texas A&M. Against a hellish backdrop of unseasonal heat humidity and fire the Bruins clawed back after being dominated in every aspect of this game. Way to go Bruins!!

Kevin Sumlin probably just lost his job.

He doesn’t deserve to lose his job. Rosen was perfect in the second half. Nothing he could have done.

Slightly miffed the media is calling Howard’s defeat of UNLV the greatest NCAA upset of all time just because the line was -46 1/2. They are making it out like Howard defeated Clemson. CLUE: UNLV is a low level MW conference program. Clearly, the bookies blew this one big time.

Same with Liberty beating Baylor. Baylor is recovering from a possible 50+ rape scandal, with head coach from friggin TEMPLE. Baylor is such persona non grata their former coach can’t even get a CFL gig. Baylor should have won, but is anyone THAT surprised a D2 school took advantage of a totally shocked program?

MAJOR props to UCLA for their epic comeback BTW. Josh Rosen is a warrior. Hopefully this will mean many more surprises this season!!!

The amazing thing (well, one of several amazing things) about the UCLA comeback, is that all the scoring was by the UCLA offense. No interception returns, no punt returns. Just A&M punt, UCLA drives for a TD. x 5.

Clock management was comical in the end, with A&M running plays with 20+ seconds on the play clock. Substituting a freshman quarterback with no experience when you had a four-year senior backup with experience was a poor choice.

Does he deserve to lose his job? Probably not. Was there something he could have done? Definitely.

These are good points. In a moment of beery empathy, I would hate that one of the most exciting inspiring moments as a Bruin fan/alum would come at the cost of Sunlins job. In fact, I was hoping we would fire Mora after week one because he failed in every aspect of his job as HC. Rosen saved him.

Western Michigan is a better team than I thought. I predicted a 60-14 win, but those guys kept it tight against USC. It was a pretty damn good game to watch (since USC won).

F UCLA.

Iowa State is 1-0 and leading the Big 12. On top of that, their first victory came over long-hated intra-state rival University of Northern Iowa (not really).

This brings the Iowa Hawkeyes to town this Saturday, for the ACTUAL rivalry. I’m predicted the Hawkeyes will pound the shit of the Cyclones, and I spend yet another year in an alcohol-induced coma. One of the few sports-related bright sides to living in Minnesota? EVERYBODY hates the Hawkeyes (except for those that couldn’t get into the UofM and had to head to Iowa for college).

The betting line has nothing at all to do with what the handicappers think the outcome of the actual game will be.

The purpose of the betting line is to predict how college football sports gamblers think the outcome of the game will be, and to generate an equal amount of money bet on each side. If the books were balanced, then the odds-makers did their job to perfection.

Boy I sure am glad I DVR’d the UCLA game and kept watching even after I knew the halftime score. As jsc1953 pointed out, it was pretty amazing given that TA&M never had a bad turnover or anything (except the tipped field goal), just got shut down and UCLA had TD drive after TD drive. Though there were certainly plenty of lucky moments - interception goes right through the safety’s hands and lands in the receiver’s, Rosen’s prayer for the 4th TD, and no review on the bobble on the go-ahead TD.

I’m still not sure Mora deserves to survive the season, but at least we’ll always have this game. And it definitely reminded me why I’m glad Noel Mazzone’s gone.
