College Football 2023

Yeah, State put on a clinic on How to Lose a Ball Game. Incredible. Sanders was hot, but State gave that away. Had them beat for 59 minutes.

I’m looking forward to their game at Kansas State on Saturday. Good test for both teams.

A lot of top-ranked teams did not blow out teams they were supposed to this week. Wonder if it is a preview of things to come.

Old Dominion had a 24-7 lead on the ACC’s Wake Forest and blew it. Damn it!

Indiana lost to Louisville.

My Kent State Golden Flashes won, though.

A couple of rules that quite a few people learned the hard way this Saturday:

  1. If the quarterback gets rid of the ball, whether by lateral or handoff, then the exception to the intentional grounding rule that allows a player “outside of the tackle box” to throw a forward pass somewhere not near any receivers no longer applies during that play, even if the ball was given back to the QB (which, in this case, is what happened).

  2. If a field goal or extra point attempt goes above the level of the top of the uprights, a call of good or no good based on whether or not the ball passed over an upright (note: if any part of the ball passes over either upright, the kick is no good) cannot be reviewed by the replay officials. This is actually specifically stated in the NCAA football rulebook.

Looks like none of the top-ranked teams went down n rankings despite difficulty with also-rans.

Except for FSU and we deserved it

Yeah, I’ll take #4 after that game all day long - even with the rumors that multiple players had the flu, that was a seriously weak outing. Gotta ramp it up this week.

Beg your pardon? Alabama dropped from 10th to 13th after beating USF 17-3.

It’s the first time in several years that Alabama has dropped out of the top 10.

My daughter is a freshman at Mizzou, who beat K-State on a 61-yard FG. She didn’t join in the massive field rush, choosing discretion is the better part of valor.

She asked me over the weekend, “Since we proved we were better than #15 Kansas State, does that mean we’ll get ranked #14?”

Oh, sweet child.

(Missouri is currently unranked, even after the win)

In the AP poll, Missouri is the second team in the ‘Others receiving votes’ category, while K-State is third. However, in the Coaches poll, K-State is first on that list, while Missouri is again second.

If they beat 3-0 Memphis on Saturday, they very well could be ranked next week.

My Cal Bears had a lot of off-season turnover, leaving us wondering what we have…and what we have is angst.

Game 1: absolutely crushed North Texas. Jaydn Ott for Heisman! Game 2: stank up the joint vs Auburn at home. They gave us 4 turnovers; we gave them 3 missed FGs (all makable) and lost 14-10. Game 3: Let FCS Idaho get out to a 17-0 lead before putting back 31 unanswered points.

Now we go to Seattle to face #8 UW as 21 point underdogs. Our only hope is that: every team has that weird voodoo opponent who somehow finds a way to win a game they had no business winning. For the Huskies, it’s us.

So I see that Deion has successfully taught his defense everything he knows about tackling.

And was that a swinging gate play I saw earlier (from Oregon)?!

I don’t know how much it has been brought up generally, but I would like to point out U of Michigan is going to be the first team to 1000 program wins, likely this season, definitely by early next season.

Go Blue

Yeah, they seem to be going for the strip, at the expense of blowing the tackle or giving up an extra 5 yards.

Saw something that made my Heart Sing today: Alabama, trailing at the half and taking a knee with time on the clock going into the locker-room. Even if they win, this will be a blot on their escutcheon.

I’m loving it. FSU pulls out a win against hated Clemson and Colorado is losing big. I’d love to see the Ducks hang a 100 point loss on them.

The Coach Prime hype train has reached the end of the line.

No, no no, not at all. I’m sure the true figure-outers out there will understand the Prime ™ dimensional chess that the new odds show an unbeatable opportunity to donate to the poor impoverished casino book owners. Win!!

I was rather surprised when I saw that Oregon was 21 point favorites (or something like that) over Colorado. Then I looked at CU’s schedule. They beat an overrated TCU team in a shootout that could have gone either way. Then they beat a barely-better-than-mediocre Nebraska team. And then they barely beat a below-average Colorado State team that outplayed them for 98% of the game and quite frankly should have won the game. We’ll see how they respond to this shellacking when they host USC next week.

It’s Sanders’ first season after taking over a one win team. I wasn’t interested in crowning him after two games and I’m not interested in executing him after four.
