Tech has to beat VT next week so the Belt can go back to UGA prior to the SEC championship game. That’s the ony way for the Belt and the BCS to match up.

Champion Notes: Virginia Tech’s win over Georgia Tech gave the Hokies their first Belt reign. The are no longer the team with the most Belt losses without a championship; that “honor” falls to Maryland who is now 0-8 in Belt contest. RB David Wilson has already established himself as the leading rusher in Virginia Tech’s Belt history while QB Logan Thomas & WR Danny Coale are the leading passer & receiver. The Hokies are 18-10-6 against North Carolina with the last loss coming in 2009 when the Tarheels upset 14th ranked Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The teams have never met in a Belt game.
Challenger Notes: North Carolina makes their second attempt this season to claim The Belt. The Tarheels lost to Clemson 59-38 in their earlier appearance which is the 6th highest scoring game in Belt history. North Carolina’s other Belt losses came against Florida State in 1999 & 2000. RB Ryan Houston needs 30 yards to pass Anthony Saunders for the Tarheels Belt career rushing lead while QB Bryn Renner needs 90 yards to pass Ronald Curry for the passing lead & WR Jheranie Boyd needs 68 yards to pass Kory Bailey for the receiving lead.
Since these games are all in the Coastal Division and since Clemson looks good for winning the Atlantic Division, there’s the chance that Clemson could get The Belt back in the ACCCG! If not Clemson, who?
Assuming one of these teams gets The Belt by season’s end, which non-ACC team has the best shot at it in 2012?
The full 2012 schedules aren’t released yet, I don’t think. But Clemson opens 2012 against Auburn, to that’s probably a good chance there.
ETA of course the Belt could be taken away from the ACC champ in the Orange bowl. Most projections have the ACC Champ playing the Big East Champ (probably Cincinnati or WVU).

That might move the Orange Bowl higher up in some people’s radar! I just have to wonder at how many other people pay any attention at all to The Belt!
If you go purely by records and not so much by BCS rankings, there’s the numerical possibility that Rutgers might make the Orange Bowl:
Big East Conf All
Cincinnati (23) 3-1 7-2
Louisville 3-2 5-5
West Virginia 3-2 7-3
Pittsburgh 3-2 5-5
Rutgers 3-2 7-3
Connecticut 2-2 4-5
South Florida 1-4 5-4
Syracuse 1-4 5-5
Actually, I was looking at the Big East standings and remaining schedules. If Cincinnati loses to Rutgers next week, then WVU, Cincinnati, Rutgers and Louisville all win out, they would all be in a 4 way tie with 2 losses. Pittsburgh also has two losses right now, but still has to play WVU so it’s also possible for there to be a 4 way tie with (Cincinnati, Rutgers, Pitt and Louisville). Craziness.
UConn could win their final 3 games and also be with two losses. of course that mean Louisville, Rutgers, and Cincy would lose.
I wonder if there is a scenario with a 5 (or 6) way tie for first (each team with 3 losses). Doing those kind of scenarios makes my head hurt, but I may give it a shot this afternoon.
what a ClusterF*ck a 6 way tie for first would be.

The ACC Champ game may have the added drama of Clemson regaining The Belt:
Champion Notes: Virginia Tech has met Clemson twice before in Belt games. The first came in 1988 when the Tigers defeated the Hokies 40-7 while the second came earlier this season as Clemson retained The Belt with a 23-3 win over Virginia Tech. This will be the first time since the 1975 season teams have had a Belt rematch. In 1975, Ohio State & UCLA met twice with the Buckeyes winning the first game while the Bruins claimed the title in the Rose Bowl rematch. The Hokies are 11-17-1 against Clemson including 0-2 in Belt games.
Challenger Notes: The Tigers held The Belt earlier this season when they defeated Auburn. They held the title for 5 games until falling to Georgia Tech. This season has produced all of the Tigers Belt career records with RB Andre Ellington leading rushing, QB Tajh Boyd leading passing, WR Sammy Watkins leading receiving, & PK Chandler Catanzaro leading scoring. Boyd needs just 23 yards to pass Ohio State’s Troy Smith for 8th on the Belt career passing list while Watkins needs 68 yards receiving to move past Miami’s Santana Moss, Florida State’s Marvin Minnis, Miami’s Jeremy Shockey, & UCLA’s J.J. Stokes for 6th on the career receiving list.

The Orange Bowl will have the added incentive to care about it by way of
Champion Notes: Clemson is Belt champions for the second time this season. They claimed the title from Auburn, defended it for 5 games before losing it to Georgia Tech. This will be the first time the Tigers have battled a Big East team for the title. QB Tajh Boyd & WR Sammy Watkins continue to improve on the Belt career leaders list. Boyd is 6th on the career passing yardage list, 7th on the touchdown passes thrown list, & 10th on the pasing yards per game list while Watkins is 6th on the receiving yardage list & 6th on the receiving yards per game list.
Challenger Notes: West Virginia is making their first Belt appearance since 2002. The Mountaineers have never held the title losing in 1986 to Penn State & in 2001 as well as 2002 to Miami. No Big East team has held The Belt since Miami’s reign ended in 2002. No Big East team has played for The Belt since Virginia Tech in 2004. West Virginia is 0-1 against Clemson losing a 1989 meeting 27-7 in the Gator Bowl. Coach Dana Holgorsen has never coached in a Belt game.
