I thought we might need an NCAA Football thread…any fans out there? who’s your team? Why? How’re they doing? Gone to any games yet?
I’ll start: University of California, aka “Cal”. I’m deliriously happier than I have any right to be…

Go Sooners!
I still cannot believe that Mike Nugent Missed that field goal. I feel like (if I were a christian) that I was watching Jesus walk on water and then have him just go under in the middle of the lake.
Roll Ti…
Roll T…
Roll Tid…
weeps
Auburn, however, looks like they might be hungry for a shot at the national title. Tennessee got thumped (and I mean THUMPED) on Saturday. It was never even a close game.
I think we have common cause here – if Cal beats SC on Saturday, we’ll both be very, very happy.
You don’t still have Bob Bockrath as your AD, do you?
Do you have one of those roll/Tide on a stick thingies?
Don’t count on lightning striking 2 years in a row.
At LEAST Ole Miss won homecoming…
I got a bad feeling about them this year.
Come talk to me when your school loses to the program (University at Buffalo) which has been ranked 119th (out of 119) in Division 1A for three straight years… and doesn’t just lose, but gets whipped.
Well it looks a good year for the ACC no matter how you slice it. Unfortunately for me, I am a Tarheel fan so I’m waiting for hoops. On the bright side, I recently moved to South Carolina and I am surrounded by Clemson and USC fans who can share in my misery !!!
You heard it here first…
Virginia beats Florida State, and climbs into the top 5. Then loses to Maryland… and Miami… and GA Tech… and VA Tech. Finishes the season at 7-4 in the “others receiving votes” category. They play in the continental tire bowl.
An even more painful alternative is that they beat Maryland and Miami too and climb up to #1 or #2. THEN they lose to GA Tech and VA Tech.
But secretly, I have this irrational hope they run the table and play in the national championship game. They’re certainly the best Virginia team in over a decade.
That’s what makes college football great. Fans of 119 teams can harbor this irrational hope before the season starts, and half of them can keep it past opening day.
My Auburn Tigers are lookin’ good so far, but there’s a lot of football yet to be played before it’s decided which teams will be playing in the SEC championship game in Atlanta the first week in December.
Tennessee fans: One of your players made the statement after the Vols lost to Auburn: “This doesn’t matter. We’ve already got our tickets to Atlanta.” If your guys don’t beat Georgia Saturday he’d better be lookin’ for a place to sell them tickets…
When do the BCS rankings start to be published, and does anybody know what, if any, significant changes were put in place for this year?
Not counting on it, at all. I have no idea how good the Bears are this year; they steamrolled some bad opposition, but our defense (particularly our secondary) is shaky, and we looked sloppy at times against Oregon State last Saturday. On the other hand, we’re at least as good as we were last year, and USC is probably no better than last year. On the other hand, it’s in LA this year. On the other hand…
Believe me, I’m just ecstatic that we’re ranked, and there’s even a possibility we can knock off #1. In my 30 years of fandom, I think I’ve seen 10 winning seasons, 6 bowl games. I’m not used to this rarefied air, up here.
Don’t know about the date. I think they’ve tweaked the model to put more emphasis on the polls and less on the computers – which basically gets us back to where we were before the BCS was invented, doesn’t it? They’ve also removed Strength of Schedule from the calculations. (but the polls are certainly free to take SoS into account when they pull their rankings out of their…hat).
Now, don’t hold back. Tell us what you really think of OU. I mean, “go” is such an ambiguous word …
I don’t like removing Strength of Schedule from the BCS formula. Opinion polls are just that, opinions. Also, the way a person votes may not even be an honest opinion. He may arrange his votes to favor his team. I’m not saying all the poll voters would do that, but if only a few do it then that changes things.
The BCS has done one big thing: We have been provided with what is a reasonable National Championship game every year. Hey! if USC wanted to be the champs last year, they shouldn’t have lost to Cal.
Well, up at Michigan State we’re looking at the college hockey schedule already. But please, one of these years can we get a genuine college football playoff in 1A? To heck with March Madness, I want December madness!
I am a huge LSU fan. This year is not going to be their year, but at least I can still bask in the glory that was last year. I tip my cap to Auburn and Georgia and wish them well to uphold the pride of the SEC.
Having said that, I wouldn’t care so much if we lost every other game as long as we beat Florida. I hate, HATE the Gators with a passion. In fact, I would even root for Miami to beat Florida, and that is saying a LOT.
So, we go to the swamp this weekend and I am not optimistic. Oh, but if we could win this one… (I still have a piece of the turf from the game several years ago when Florida came to Tiger stadium ranked #1 and we whupped 'em.)
I know a guy who works in the athletic fundraising department at UB. It was actually sad to hear him talk up the Bulls’ season. “Well, we could beat Eastern Michigan…Marshall’s bound to have a down year, maybe we could catch them…Is Akron supposed to be good this year? Maybe we have a chance there.” He reckoned they had to win at least three games this year, or they would have no chance of even remaining in I-A, what with the new rules on minimum attendences. So, at the very least, you can console yourself that UB has its backs against the wall, I suppose.
To heck with hockey, I’m just excited that MSU basketball PRACTICE is starting in 11 days!
