Wanna talk college football?

It took me some digging to find out who you’re talking about (UCF). 3 losses to BCS teams…ok, not good, but not unexpected. But man…Buffalo? I feel your pain.

I’m fairly neutral about the SEC, but I’ve adopted the Gators because a family friend is now a student there…so I’m bummed to hear this. How can you hate Florida, when FSU & Miami are so handy and so much more despicable?

Florida State Seminole here!

This is NOT our year nor has it been since Chris Rix has been our QB. Rix stinks. Let me say that once more RIX STINKS and Bobby’s son Jeff is an awful offensive coach. But after saying all that, igloorex Virginia ain’t gonna beat us, no way no how!

I too tip my hat to Auburn this year and the Georgia/Auburn game should be the battle for the SEC championship…hell it may get played twice, once in regular season and again in the SEC championship game. All of that pending that the Bulldogs can beat the Gators at the World’s Largest Cocktail Party in Jax.

And a Crimson Tide home game…now there’s the world’s largest assembly of rednecks.

It’s all about the Michigan Wolverines. Oh, yeah. I know there have to be some other U of M fans.

The BCS rankings are now 1/3 AP poll, 1/3 Coaches poll, and 1/3 computer rankings. BCS changes have yet to make it a better system, and I can’t see these changes being any different. The problem with the system isn’t how we pick two teams, it’s that there’s almost always more than two teams worthy of playing for the national championship.

Wow, you must have been pretty disappointed for 14 of the past 16 years. But I must admit, this game will be no cakewalk for my Gators. LSU is in the same position UF was in this time last year, 1-2 in the SEC and fighting for respectability. They even had a players only team meeting, just like we did before we bounced back and beat LSU last year. There’s still a lot of talent on that team, and I think it’s gonna be a great game in the Swamp.

If we can win this game, we’re probably back in the East race, but beating Georgia this year may be tough. At this point, our defense doesn’t look good enough to consistently stop a good offense. But with our offense, we have a chance to beat anyone in the country.

Illinois fan here. We’re less terrible than last year but still just awful. We’re a coaching change plus a rebuilding phase away from going to another bowl. I doubt we see a winning record in the next 3 years. All this just 3 years removed from a 10-1 BCS bowl trip. Sigh. At least basketball starts November 19th. I can’t wait.

Die.

My tuition money is going to LSU. I’m distraught.

I agree that the Hurricanes are despicable. But the Gators had Steve Spurrier and how could you not hate that? Plus, as HowieReynolds posted, Florida has gotten the better of LSU since about 1990 or so. (Except for that one magical moment…). It’s easy for me to focus that negative energy toward all things UF. Probably like the Redskin fans must really detest Dallas having lost to them, what 13 out of the past 14 games?

I have no negative feelings for FSU. I don’t particularly root for them but it doesn’t pain me when they win.

divemaster, I’ll grant you the Steve Spurrier point. Cowboys/Redskins, LSU/Florida = Cal/USC. Cal hates USC with the blazing heat of a thousand suns, primarily because they have been consistently, historically, better. And will tell you, without being asked.

About FSU…a few years back, on the eve of a bowl game (poonster will correct me if I miss any of the details, I’m sure) Sebastian Janikowski was in jail, again…and Bobby Bowden was asked if he’d be benched for the bowl game. Bowden just laughed it off, saying something to the effect that team rules don’t apply to Polish kickers. That’s kind of colored my perception of FSU.

They are a great team this year but this isn’t the first time. You are obviously aware of the age old tradition of the Cavalier collapse. Great team. Couple great wins. Starts thinking they’re great. Gets ass kicked by mediocre foe. The last great Virginia team I saw personally got waxed in Keenan Stadium. Think that was '01. If you loose to us, you Suck. Yeah that’s a capital S.

Go Blue!!!
I’m still pissed that somehow we lost to Notre Lame. So it’s a freshman quaterback, and inexperienced running back. C’mon coach you have to play to win, not try sit on a 9 point lead for 40 minutes.

Oh well, still a chance for a big ten crown and a rose bowl. All we gotta do is beat the overrated Gophers and Purdue, then it’s down to the traditional late november matchup with the suckeyes.

And how come Braylon isn’t getting any Heisman love yet? :frowning:

That is indeed our tradition. Bloody our nose and we fold like a cheap suit. In fact, I wouldn’t be at all surprised as a long suffering cavalier fan to see us start our losing streak this Thursday against Clemson, followed by losses to MD, FSU, Miami, GT, and VT. We could easily be 5-6 this season. (Even the most pessimistic UVA fan can’t imagine a Virginia team this good losing to Duke.)

That said, I think we have our best chance against FSU in a long time (my bachelor party was the night in 1995 we had the great goal line stand that gave FSU its first-ever ACC loss. It’s one of the few things I actually remember from that night. For the record, we followed up that moment of glory with losses to GA Tech and VA Tech.)

I agree that Rix blows. If he stays hurt, that will make the UVA-FSU game much closer.

That’s a cool thing about college football; how every conference has a Perennial Doormat (Vanderbilt in the SEC, Indiana in the Big 10; presumably Duke in the ACC)…but every generation or so, the doormat rises up and smites the mighty.

Igloorex ,
Clemson is reeling and anything below .500 and BooHooBabyBoy Bowden looses his job, 5 year extension or not. I think it is a good possibility that Virginia looses this one. Predict a win over FSU. The Seminoles aren’t all that this year. Rix is a puss. GT could be a surprise but they would have to have an exceptional performance and VA an exceptionally poor outing. Miami is a loss most likely and Maryland and VT are a toss up. The conference is just much better and the little mental skids that teams like VA and NC State are prone to will be greatly amplified.

As for my beloved Tarheels, Bunting is a miserable excuse for a coach. Unfortunately, after the Mac Brown’s fair weather fan debacle, no decent coach will come to UNC for a long time unless you’re talking round ball.

What is the bowl situation in the ACC now anyway ? Best season we ever had was under Brown, only loss was to FSU and the best we could do was the Gator Bowl on account of some stupid contract that at that time stipulated that 2nd place in the ACC had to go there. I think that has change in last couple years, or at least I hope so for teams like VA and NC State.

BOILER UP!

Orton has been doing awesome – if he were playing for any other team than Purdue I think he’d get the Heisman. Purdue gets ignored a lot, and they are an AWESOME team this year. I was thrilled watching the Notre Dame game last weekend – first time in 30 years Purdue managed to beat them at home. Not even with Drew Brees could they do that.

For the ACC, the champion plays in one of the BCS bowls, and then the rest of the ACC goes to one these bowls: Chick-fil-A Peach, Continental Tire, Humanitarian, Tangerine, Toyota Gator. I guess the Peach Bowl is the most prestigious of those.

The BCS site isn’t very helpful. It lists which bowls are linked to which conferences, but not their ordering.

Who’d a thunk that a college football thread would wind up with people talking about the ACC?

Oh, and I agree with earlier posters that Miami is indeed despicable. They gave the odd sesnsation of actually rooting for FSU.

The Gator Bowl is a pretty good bowl game. It’s on New Year’s Day and it matches the #2 teams in the ACC and Big East (or Notre Dame.)

It’s good to see that there are other Big double half dozen (aka Big 10) folks out there.

The vicious, fanggg bearing mighty fighting Gophers have come screaming out of the gates…

Okay, so there first real test comes against Michigan this weekend, the peewee league opponants have been cast aside with atypical glee. Please allow me my moment of undefeatedness.

Yes it is, we have been several times but the year that was a travisty was 1997. The Tarheels were the #4 team in the country and played the gator bowl. That’s just not right. We demolished Virginia Tech in that game by like 40 points. If this contract that puts second place ACC team in the gator bowl is still in place (I can’t imagine that it is), can you imagine how pissed Miami or FSU or VT will be every year when a great team ends up there ?

Since the introduction of the BCS, a top five team that doesn’t win it’s conference will be one of the at-large teams in a BCS bowl, playing either a big conference champ or the other at-large team.
