College Football: Let's talk Bowl Games!!!

UCLA wins, 50-38, in a game featuring two onside kicks returned for touchdowns in the last 3 minutes. Is it too late to chime in with a “Neener, neener, neener!”?

“Neener, neener, neener”? Man, this trash-talking stuff is HARD!

This Orange Bowl is surreal… both offenses suck ass. Penn State is missing their starting RB baaaadly. It almost resembles Alabama without Prothro. Though, if there is any consolation, FSU isn’t doing better.

I am convinced that Bobby Bowdon sold… something to the Devil. This is the most surreal thing I’ve ever seen.

I’m incredibly shocked.

Neurotik, you were right.

Jeez Louise, both of these teams suck. How they got here, I have no clue.

Well, both teams’ kickers suck, but I think the strong defenses are just shutting down the efforts by the offense.

I thought Penn State was going to bring a smackdown to FSU based on the disparity in ranking (#3 vs. #22), but FSU really showed up for a game.

Thanks, but I have to say that I thought I was going to be eating a lot of crow in the first half of the first quarter when FSU couldn’t get anything going and PSU was marching down the field at will. What a crazy game.

West Virginia’s victory has been somewhat overshadowed but it will have far reaching ramifications for the rest of the college football world. Primarily for teams in the Mountain West, but also maybe for teams in the SEC (who may begin to fear the spread offense that Meyer is running after seeing a spread offense beat their champion 2x in one season.)

With a Sugar Bowl victory over a Georgia team as good as this one (and they are good, a stomping of LSU is the mark of a great team) West Virginia saved the Big East’s BCS bid. As long as we do the BCS the way we do it now, the Big East will have their bid. The Big East will be the worst BCS conference, but it’s now all but guaranteed to be a BCS conference.

Both are good teams talent-wise. FSU has sucked this year in spite of their talent. Penn State has won, on the other hand.

I have no idea why people thought it would be unheard of for FSU to make some noise, anyone who follows recruiting knows FSU has it good every year, with their talent they can beat anyone, any day, any season.

Yeah, but they still can’t kick straight in the city of Miami. (Where does Bobby Bowden keep finding these walleyed kickers, anyway? And is JoePa shopping there, too, now? )

As a disgusted and depressed Miami fan, I’d like to thank FSU and PSU for a most entertaining and memorable game. It was easily one of the weirdest football freakshows I’ve ever seen in my life.

Man, I’m glad the Gators won their bowl game. Somebody from Florida has gone to win one.

Can we highlight how much shit the SEC has sucked this bowl year?

As far as I calculate it, they’re 3-3. But, it’s worse than that when you break it down.

Missouri beat South Carolina, a 4 point favorite.
LSU spanked Miami. That was a good one.
Bama won a squeaker over Texas Tech. Bama was a small dog.
Florida beat Iowa with the help of about 5 atrocious calls. Significant atrocioius calls.
Auburn lost to Wisconsin as a big favorite.
Georgia lost to WVU as a big favorite.

Here’s the big conference breakdown unless I calculated something wrong. I couldn’t find a proper site that listed it all.

ACC: 6-2
Big: 12 5-2
Pac-10: 2-2
SEC: 3-3
Big-10: 3-4
Big East: 1-3

Even C-USA was 3-3 with a quality win by Tulsa over Fresno State. Mac was 1-1. MWC was 2-2. Wac 1-2.

SEC really only has one quality win in there. If you watched that Florida game, you know what I mean. They had a terrible call keep a drive alive right before the half that led to 7 points. And, the offsides call on the onsides kick was terrible. EVEN IF the guy was offsides (which he wasn’t) that call is never made. There were PI calls, holding calls. It was really the kind of game where you wonder if the refs were in someone’s pocket.

Speaking as an Orange-and-Blue blooded Gator alumnus, I agree. There were some pretty bad calls there, only one of which went Iowa’s way. It would have been nice to have a “clean” Gator victory. Of course, “Bad calls are part of the game.” and all that…

As a Nebraska fan, I see that too, there were some terrible calls against Michigan. Of course, they had 60 minutes of football around those 2-3 bad calls, and did lose an 11-point lead in the 4th.

So, enough of that, who wins TONIGHT?

I say USC, and I say that despite Texas’ edge in defense and the media’s love affair with Vince Young. I think Mack Brown is the key, and we’ve seen him in big games against teams like OU and Pac-10 teams in the Holiday Bowls. He’ll panic if USC gets ahead either by turnovers or quick scores and things could snowball.

Oh my goodness…was that a GAME last night??! I was rooting for USC, for the honor of the Pac-10 even though I despise SC with every fiber of my being…but damn, did Vince Young put on a show.

Here’s what I have as the complete conference results:

Mid-Majors:

C-USA: 3-3
Sun Belt: 0-1
MAC: 1-1
Mtn West: 2-2
WAC: 1-2

Independents: 1-1

BCS

Pac-10: 3-2
Big XII: 5-3
ACC: 5-3
Big East 1-3
Big 10 3-4
SEC 3-3

Doesn’t look like anyone has any serious bragging to do. The Big 10 started 0-4, then came up big after New Year’s Day.
