I’ll bet she won’t slap anyone else. I think the school’s response was appropriate, since his reaction was disproportionate, but she had no right to strike him, and he had no obligation to take the hit and walk away. I wouldn’t give her one dime in her lawsuit.
I think a 6 month suspension from the team would be proper, after his 10 year prison sentence.
Actually here’s a larger video. She summons him over at the 46 second mark. She holds the back of her hand to him and wiggles her fingers in the “come here” gesture.
Let’s dispense with the ‘men should never hit women’ stuff. Nobody should hit anybody.
When she hit him, he should have had her arrested for assault and battery.
Yep.
When it comes to size, body mass, muscle and just plain fighting ability I am probably in the bottom quarter of men, if not the bottom 10 percent.
If I slap the crap outa some bigger than me guy and he give a good punch back…very few people are gonna feel particularly sorry for me. I ain’t giving any woman who pulls the same boneheaded move any more sympathy than I’d get.
Hey, he was just standing his ground. Or is that only for guns? Not guilty!
I’m all for self defense. But I’m also for reasonable behavior. If I got slapped by a small woman, a small man, or a toddler I’m not thinking of knocking them the hell out. Im thinking of removing myself from the situation before someone gets seriously injured. He could have killer her.
I think the person who started it should see as much legal punishment as the person who reacted, even if they overreacted to the attack (generally speaking).
If there is no excuse to over react, was there any excuse to make it physical to start with? If not, you can suck up some serious punishment too. And neither of you would be in this mess you had not been and ass and got the ball rolling in the first place.
Here’s Oklahoma’s physical-force statute:
To use or to attempt to offer to use force or violence upon or toward the person of another is not unlawful in the following cases:
…
- When committed either by the person about to be injured, or by any other person in such person’s aid or defense, in preventing or attempting to prevent an offense against such person, or any trespass or other unlawful interference with real or personal property in such person’s lawful possession; provided the force or violence used is not more than sufficient to prevent such offense;
All legalities and arguments of fairness aside, why not act in manner that isn’t likely to brain damage someone? The speed and power difference between a trained male athlete and a random woman is huge. What’s wrong with restraint and discretion? I’ve been in several fights and even when I’m hit first I’m looking to resolve the situation with a minimum of mutual damage, if I can do so safely.
I would equally condemn, if less strongly, any man who hit a smaller male like that. I would also not want someone with that much anger and pitiful lack of self-control playing for me in a sports match.
Okay, lets say he should have shown more restraint than he did. So you want to really punish him. Okay fine. Serious punishment. But he didn’t start this shit. Somebody else did. Doing something they didn’t have any excuse doing in first place.
Dude wouldn’t BE in this mess if some other jackass had not “overeacted” either.
Don’t be starting something and nobody will be seeing the county Hilton.
Good thread to figure out who the wife beaters are.
This is uncalled for and bordering on being a jerk and calling other posters wife beaters. Dial it back. If you feel you must, the BBQ Pit is right around the corner.

The law (at least in most jurisdictions) says that self-defence is for self-defence, not for getting revenge on people being jerks. Realistically no-one could say what he did was necessary for the purposes of defending himself or that he could’ve thought it was.
The fact that he got punished for it is entirely appropriate, however for anyone who would like to see life-ruining punishment, it cannot be ignored that he was subject to significant provocation by the victim. That doesn’t excuse his actions, but it does mitigate them.
As for whether she should’ve received (legal) punishment, again I think it is right she did not. Though she seems to have assaulted him, she was then subjected to a much more serious assault. In such a situation no-one can say she got off scot-free (at least not on a personal rather than legal level) and prosecuting the minor crime could have the effect of deterring people from reporting the more serious crime.
In other words I don’t disagree to how this was handled. Like with many crimes, it’s a lose-lose situation so nobody is going to emerge happy.
She attacked him. He reacted to the attack.
His reaction was restrained, he didn’t totally beat her up, just one decent whack.
It’s totally unreasonable to expect someone to just do nothing or carefully dose their response when they are attacked to the face. A violent reaction is a natural response.
Sure, I guess that any small woman pushing with both hands at a man’s chest is lucky to only get skull fractures and not be beaten to a pulp. She should be grateful he didn’t kill her.
I like how all those unconcerned carry on with their purchases and serving as usual.
She did not just push him, she hit him in the face.
I would fully expect to be hit, even if I ‘only pushed’ a bloke.
I like how we can now see which truly is the gender with privilege.
(see, other people can be pedantic too,** Evan**)
No doubt that’s true. But let’s take Trayvon Martin for example. He didn’t have to react to the provocation of Zimmerman. Now Trayvon Martin is dead. Sometimes you have no choice to defend yourself and I’m all for defending one’s self and property. But many times you do have a choice to how and when you defend yourself and just because a certain level of force is legal doesn’t mean it’s right or necessary.
I don’t like unnecessary force be it by the police or random people. Again, if in doubt flail away. But he’s a trained athlete and could have at any time defused or walked away from the situation while taking absolutely no harm. Now if she persued him and started biting and scratching ok smack her back but that was a helluva punch.
He tried to walk away, that’s when she attacked. Is what I thought I saw.
