I expected Bama to get a couple votes, but Georgia getting one is absurd. They’ve beaten one ranked team (Florida) and got their doors absolutely blown off by the only other ranked team they played (So. Carolina). At least Bama has beaten 3 ranked teams and their one loss was by less than a TD.
Also, as long as Steve Spurrier has a vote, ND will never be unanimous #1 in the coaches poll.
Nope. What Lane Kiffen needs is a contract extension. Something meaty so he can stop worrying about paying the rent and really sink his teeth into the job (and the team into the crapper).
So my alma mater, the University of California, fired head coach Jeff Tedford today.
Mixed feelings on this end. When he took over, our program was a shambles, having gone 1-10 the previous season under the inept coaching of Tom Holmoe. He immediately turned it around and we played in 8 bowl games in 11 seasons. However, our performance over the last 3 years was pretty lackluster (5-7, 7-6, culminating with a 3-9 shitshow this year). The game seemed to have passed him by in some respects, as he never really adapted to the trend towards the spread option, opting to run a pro-style offense to the very end. His 2012 offense is probably very similar to his 2002 offense.
Despite his failings, the Old Blues I have talked to will always appreciate how he resurrected the program and helped get the new facilities built.
The rumor is that Boise State’s Chris Petersen would only be interested in changing jobs for 2 openings: Oregon and Cal. Cal’s job is open, and Oregon’s probably will be (when Kelly goes to the NFL, as is widely expected). We’d take him in a heartbeat.
Good review of Tedford’s time at Cal. Back when he was new, he was a great QB developer. What’s been their biggest problem? Talent or scheme? Other PAC teams can run pro style offenses and be successful (USC, Stanford).
Mostly talent, I would say. Tedford has a reputation of being a quarterback guru, but he hasn’t been able to develop a high quality quarterback in many years at Cal. We haven’t had a draftable quarterback since Aaron Rodgers, who graduated in 2004. Since then, we’ve had Nate Longshore, Joe Ayoob, Kevin Riley, Zach Maynard… not a great list.
I would say our O-line, WRs/TEs and RBs have been good enough to be very successful, but our quarterback play has dragged us down for years. Our defenses have been good-but-not-great, I suppose that’s also more related to talent than scheme. Let’s face it, Cal is not a destination for a lot of blue-chip talent. Hopefully the new facilities will help change that.
I think you can forget about Saban. He’s got the best job in college football. His name is second only to Bear Bryant at the moment. He ain’t going anywhere.
My take (slightly different from markdash’s): it’s mostly scheme. Cal has had some talent come through – I think they’re like #9 in alumni currently in the NFL. From 2002- 2006, our offensive identity was pro-set, run-first, smash-mouth football, behind some great offensive lines. Starting in 2007 though, Tedford started tinkering, becoming enamored of the “mobile QB”, and the quality of his OL also suffered (and he hired an incredibly bad OL coach). He added elements of spread, read-option, wildcat, pistol…it was a Frankenstein monster. And coach turnover was awful - there have been like 5 OC’s in the past 6 years. No offensive identity.
So Kenneth Massey had that Texas team ranked at 14, but doesn’t even have the Noles in the Top 25? The same Noles that are -8 over the #2 Gators? Computer polls blow chunks.
Nate Silver where are you!?!?!?!?!?
Seriously, I would LOVE to see a full-blown analysis of poll accuracy week-over-week as well as the season as a whole.
In fairness, none of the computers appear to be under-valuing FSU. The ACC is woeful, once again. Clemson is not getting much respect either. Ga Tech is in the ACC-Champ Game and they lost to Middle Tennessee St.
Looking here, the ACC has not statement OOC win this year.
UVa beating Penn St., Clemson over Auburn are the only wins against the SEC/Big 10/Big 12/PAC12
FSU and Miami have beat USF and NCSt beat UConn and Maryland beat Temple.
Frankly the ACC sucks ever worst than normal and the computer rankings reflect that.
And Full Disclosure, I am a GaTech Grad.
ACC really needs to win the three games big rivalry games tomorrow to bolster FSU’s remote chances to get into the BCS game.
We’ve got a decent shot at going 2-1 vs SEC tomorrow (I’ll leave it to you to figure out the 1. ;)) and maybe then we’ll get some respect, but I doubt it.
As for the title game, FSU doesn’t really have a shot (and shouldn’t - we lost to an unranked team), but to pretend that one bad week makes us worse than a couple of two loss teams is ridiculous (or in Massey’s case THREE and FOUR loss teams). Strength of schedule is a valuable measure, but shouldn’t be the be-all/end-all of college football.
And it was somewhat valid then. The problem with Boise St is that they wanted to eliminate SoS altogether and pretend all wins were equal. I’m not saying that, but UT had lost to Oklahoma (ranked 13/14 depending on where you look) and West Virginia (unranked). Ranked teams they beat…Ok St (21). That’s it.
FSU lost to NC State (unranked) and beat Clemson (11). How does beating a lower ranked team and losing to an additional ranked team equate to a tougher SoS?
Losing to a ranked team should not outweigh beating anyone.
I googled this topic recently and found human and computer are generally pretty similar in accuracy (according to one analysis), and the computer poll analysis showed a peak of around 76% each year.
Also, something to consider about Massey is that Massey had Utah at #1 prior to the Sugar Bowl when they beat Alabama - lots of people thought his system was broken before the victory.
That appears to just be a consolidated list of the polls. Big whoop. Texas had an average rank of 18.12 and lost to a team with an average rank of 41.01. The polls were wrong. How does that impact their accuracy? I don’t care if they are all wrong together, I want to know if they are wrong.
ETA: By his own analysis, he’s a massive outlier with regard to FSU. Avg. 13.2 Std Dev 6.2. Massey 27. He’s more than 2 Std Dev. off the average.
