That’s pretty much how I feel. There are some views that merit contempt. I will dish it out as I see it, and I certainly feel I should receive it if I maintain drooling idiocy. Do I like it? No, not really.
And it is certainly not proper GD behavior to call someone a fucking idiot, though perhaps when I become rich, quit my job, and create my own message board, it will be acceptable behavior there.
One amusing thing for me in this thread is the “debate” as to whether special contributors should have different rules applied to them on these boards.
It’s amusing because they already do. An unoriginal, uninformed GDer who acted like Coll did would have been booted before they reached 200 posts. And it’s not just Coll - a long-time and/or particularly knowledgeable Doper just about always gets more leeway than a run-of-the-mill vituperative ideologue or the like. It usually takes a flat-out meltdown (a la FreakFeely) or a refusal to heed numerous warnings to tone it down (a la Satan or Coll) before someone like that gets yanked.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. We are a community, and a community is more quick to forgive or tolerate the antics of a “pillar of the community” than they are for a yokel just off the bus.
So let’s not pretend that Coll didn’t get special treatment or consideration. He did – and he still blew it.

Even in death it appears that Collounsbury should get special consideration. I didn’t hear anyone complaining about the post banning villification of JDT, AWC,Wildest Bill and others.
Normally I’d agree with you. But in this particular case, I think he can take it. In fact, if Collounsbury reads this, I suspect it will amuse him. In any event, there are plenty of folks willing to respond to the more ridiculous calumnies on his behalf.
Actually, I’m quite pleased the way this thread is turning out. For the most part, people have offered their open and honest opinions, both good and bad. All in all, a fitting tribute.

Personally, if I had been banned (whatever the reason) and lurked in this thread, I’d be a mite happy, too. There would be people defending me, there’d be people assaulting me, and there’d be people debating the relevance of either. I think I’d feel a little smugly satisfied.

Sure the Clique exists. The accusation that the Clique is monolithic or pro-active, or even self-aware, is false. The simple fact that people give more credence and pay more attention (and give greater leeway to) the group of persons who are well-established in the community shouldn’t be in dispute.
That’s really the problem with talk of a clique and such things. When a guy hires his old college roommate’s son, he doesn’t think he is swinging the power of the “old boy’s network” into gear; he just thinks he is doing a favor for a friend.
