Awhile back I read an interesting article. It said that one possible cause of sleep disorders is that we’re now exposed to large amounts of blue light in the evening from monitors and display screens, which we never were in the past. This led me to find an alternate lighting scheme for my bedroom in the evenings. What I finally ended up with is what are called “bug lights”- not bug zapper lights which are the exact opposite of what I was looking for, but yellow-tinted light bulbs advertised as less likely to attract insects because most of their blue light is filtered out. I bought two fluorescent 60W equivalents and a double socket adapter and tried them out. It took a bit of experimentation: first I tried them in a desk lamp and liked the color but they were too low to light the room properly. I tried them as ceiling lights and they were much brighter but gave the room a weird glare. I finally tried a 6-foot floor lamp and got the best balance between lighting and glare. I find the light very peaceful and relaxing in the evening. YMMV but if you’re looking for an alternate lighting option you might give this a try.
So you’re saying these lights don’t bug you?
What seems to work well for us is to not have any blue lights in the bedroom. This means the bedroom is a no phones, no laptops, no tablets zone, and the TV is rarely on, except for the morning news.
Why do you think there are more sleep disorders than in the past? Is it just that you didn’t have sleep disorders in the past, but now you do? That’s called aging.
