Everyone is raving about this musical. I thought I might catch it while I’m in London in May. Any dopers seen it? It seems like a very odd subject for a musical but so was Rent and Evita.
Yes. I saw it at the La Jolla Playhouse for it’s pre Broadway run. And I Loved it. While the subject might seem odd at first; it’s really just a play about people being put in an unusual situation and dealing with it the best they can. It’s fun and uplifting and inspirational. And it has some very unBroadway type music (which only adds to its charm).
It’s also coming on tour to Chicago in July!
I have not seen the musical but the real-life story of what happened in Gander, Newfoundland is really great and amazing. (Immediately after the 9/11 attacks, US airspace was closed and planes diverted. 38 planes were landed in this small town of less than 10,000 residents, which meant they had to host 6,700 strangers. Churches, schools and so forth in this and other nearby towns were used to temporarily house them and the locals went out of their way to be welcoming.)
Definitely see it, and read “The Day The World Came To Stay,” the story it is based on. As the advertisement for the musical states: In a day or darkness, they gave the world a ray of light."
We have seen ~10 musicals over the past two years. “Come from Away” was the most fun, uplifting, and unexpected. As much as I loved Hamilton and the spectacle of Aladdin, I think I would recommend “Come From Away” higher to demonstrate the magic of Broadway/stage/musicals!
I am a bit nerdy (aren’t we all?) but I had a similar experience to seeing Copenhagen on Broadway: 3 actors + 3 chairs = 2 hours of compelling storytelling all due to the twists on how each person interpreted what was said and how each person believed their words would be interpreted. Proof was also good in a “why/how would they make a play about that?” way.
Wow, I guess the thread we just had on this has already dropped off the page.
I highly recommend it. It is heartwarming and uplifting and the songs are good, and each actor plays multiple characters, but is excellent at switching from one to the other (you’ll never get confused.) I will see this show again the very next time I have the opportunity.
Edit to add: I agree with Disheavel on Copenhagen – the perfect drama equivalent of the Uncertainty Principle.
