Starting around half an hour before my girlfriend goes to sleep most nights, she slips further and further into a state of deliriousness. Her mind just starts to wander, continually merging with the dream world while trying to still keep up a logical conversation from an outside perspective. Of course, she remembers nothing of her comments the next morning.
Here was last night’s example:
“Are there such a thing as black diamonds?” she asked, completely out of the blue.
“I’m not sure.” I replied.
“Are they negative?”
“Uh…What?” was about all I could manage.
Pause.
“You should look into the black diamonds, they’re kinda ominous.” she concluded before falling asleep about one minute later.
Naturally I got out of bed, typed them up, e-mailed them to her. I had to know what the hell she was talking about. Well, no such luck.
She didn’t have any idea what any of it meant. She had no idea why she was even thinking of black diamonds, let alone whether they exist, why one would be negative, or what a positive diamond looks like. But she did have one suggestion: make a thread about it and see what the Dopers (AKA the teaming hundreds) think.
Black diamonds are a Quest Object in Arcanum, a computer game. These diamonds are required to honor Moorindal, the God of Shadows, in his altar at the Ancient Temple. His blessing grants +8 backstab, +4 melee, and +4 prowling.
Regular diamonds are white or clear(ish), so black diamonds would be the opposite. And since white diamonds sparkle and reflect light they are positive. If black diamonds don’t reflect light they might absorb light instead (being opposite, you know), and that would be negative. And ominous.
“Don’t take anything off the end of a stick!”
<thinks for a moment>
“ANYWHERE ON A STICK!”
This was the valuable advice my DW gave me as she was drifting off one night soon after we were married. She, also, was unable to enlighten me in the morning.
