My son, almost 11,has finally taken an interest in movies which aren’t cartoons.
He loved Dickie Roberts (as did I,I know,we are weird).
Also loved the original Freaky Friday.
He (and I ) loved Three Days.
Like me,he much prefers comedies.
So recommend some movies we can check out of the library which are for his age range and funny.
Well, compared to their Paramount stuff, yeah. It still had some funny moments, but they turned Harpo into a harmless faun and Groucho into a kindly matchmaker. I love MGM, but that is the same studio who took sexy, saucy Jeanette MacDonald away from Paramount and sewed her vagina shut . . .
Your average 11 year old will find it hilarious. The subjects they make fun of are adult though. (Like racism, large man-parts and seeing grown men naked. Plus farts.)
Here are some recommendations from the “just turned 13 set” that hangs out in my basement:
Home Alone (1, 2 & 3)
Liar, Liar
What’s Up Doc
The Santa Clause
Little Giants
Mighty Ducks (1, 2 & 3)
Homeward Bound (1 & 2)
Sandlot
Mouse Hunt
Short Circuit (1 & 2)
Flubber
Beethoven (1 & 2…there’s 5 now I think)
Babe (and Babe, Pig in the City)
Baby Geniuses
Batteries Not Included
Three Men and a Baby (they thought this might be “too adult” because the baby pees)
They also thought Mel Brooks and Monty Python movies might be a little too racy for a “child that young.” They were really cute and concerned and condescending. They did think an 11 year old would love some movies with more “action,” such as
Jurassic Park
Men in Black
Superman
Spiderman
but didn’t know if you were “one of those non-violent parents.”
Then they came up with a lot of animated and semi-animated films
Charlotte’s Web
Stuart Little
Shrek
Mulan
Lion King
American Tail & Fievel Goes West
etc., but I told them I thought you wanted to stick to “real” movies. They “humpfed” and went back to watching Pirates of the Caribbean.
They just came running upstairs yelling “Problem Child,” “Problem Child,” which I can only take to mean they highly recoomend Problem Child and Problem Child 2.
On the way back down I heard them muttering “I suppose she’ll think Star Wars is too advanced.” YMMV, but my kids really did like Star Wars at 10 or 11.
