Comic book cover collections

I’m not a comics enthusiast, really. I see the great cover art, sometimes, and then look inside and see not-as-impressive interior art and some stupid story about one superhero beating up another superhero. Again.

So, I was wondering if they put together collections of the year’s best comic covers, or something. Like the Dark Horse 2005 Collection, or whatever.

I haven’t seen anything like that at my local comic shop, or online, but I don’t really know what I’m looking for. I know occasionally individual artists will put out a retrospective of their work, which I wouldn’t mind if it was an artist I admire (like Adam Hughes, who I know hasn’t done one yet). I already own Alex Ross’s “Mythology”.

So, anyone know of anything like that?

There have been collections of the Sandman covers by Dave McKean (“Dust Covers,” I believe it is called) and the Preacher covers by Glenn Fabry, which I hated. Not sure about publisher-specific collections, though. If you like Mike Allred’s stuff (I love it!), he has recently been coming out with a series called The Vault, collecting all of his covers and other artwork, sketches, scripts, notes, photos of licensed merchandise, and so forth.

I used to own a book of covers of the 1940s Planet Comics, SF drawings mostly by Lou Fine.

There are some online sites that collect wacky, out-of-context covers, like Superdickery and Scott Shaw’s Oddball Comics.

That’s really not at all what I am wanting. Entertaining though they are.
