Comic Book Recommendation (and Discussion?) Thread

I’ve recently got back into reading comic books as a way to unwind at night. I’m currently reading The Walking Dead (since I like the show, I figured I might as well), Doctor Strange, Groo and Ninjak (Ninja-K). I used to love Superman, but everybody tells me that the current incarnations are only so-so. I’ll probably pick it up sometime anyway, just because I used to be such a big fan.

So, who else reads comic books? What do you like to read? Anything that you’d recommend?

Issue 3 of “Conan/Wonder Woman” just came out…and, quite to my surprise, it’s a good title. The art is very good, and the story, amazingly, does justice to both characters, and treats both of their mythoi with serious respect.

It’s light-years ahead of the typical fanservice crossover.

My current fave is still Gold Digger, although sometimes Fred Perry gets lazy and just phones it in. When he’s at the top of his game, he’s very, very good. He’s one of the few comics writers who can actually make me cry.

Adventure Finders by Rod Espinosa is also pretty good. It’s a fairly standard “dungeon adventurers” story, but the art is really spiffing, and the love he has for his characters shows clearly. Espinosa is one of the best artists in the business; his mini-series “The Courageous Princess” was truly lovely. He does “engineering” drawing better than anyone else.

X-Men Gold and X-Men Blue are both staying good. Our old favorite X-Men characters, in a new twist. These are our rewards for staying faithful!

Adventure Finders sounds like something I might like. I read volume 1 of Pathfinder Chronicles: Dark Waters Rising but I found that the art just didn’t work for me. It reminded me of shaky cam in movies.

I’d like to see them reprint old comics verbatim, and offer subscriptions. Start the Superman subscriptions in the 50s, with all those crazy stories. I loved those old stories. I’d really look forward to getting them in the mail.

I don’t know what you’re looking for, but here are my all-time favorite comic stories:
Daredevil: Born Again
Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn
Batman: Year One and Year Two
Grendel: Devil by the Deed
Spider Man: Kraven’s Last Hunt
The Shadow: Fire of Creation

If you like The Walking Dead, I suggest checking out Afterlife with Archie and the new Sabrina. Both are very good - gory horror with dark, creepy storylines. Sabrina, especially, is super-dark and delightfully Lovecraftian. Not your parents’ Archie Comics by a long way.

There are some, but not so much on an issue by issue basis. They exist as collections, typically hardbound. There’s a hardcover collection for “The Warlord” that I’d like to get. It is very expensive everywhere I’ve seen it though.

I don’t think there’s a wrong answer to this thread because it will hopefully be more than just recommendations but also some discussion. In terms of recommendations, I am looking for newer material since I’d like to get issues as they come out. That’s part of the fun. However, in some cases, e.g. The Walking Dead, this is going to take a LOT of catching up!

What is it about those series that you particularly liked?

I’m not sure what my favorite would be. I’d say maybe the Infinity Gauntlet story, which of course makes me very excited for the upcoming movie. I hope it does it well!

Jimmy Corrigan. It’s a graphic novel, but it was originally separate books plus extra material. It’s not for everyone, but I love it.

Thor is very good.
If you read one comic series it should be Ms. Marvel.
The first two issues of Duck Tales were so so, but the latest issue is very good.
Astro City is another must read.

I am really enjoying DC’s current output, subsequent to the launch of their ‘Rebirth’ initiative. Tom King is the best Batman writer ever, IMO. Detective Comics is solid as well. And I have been enjoying Action, Superman, and Super Sons as well.

Really, it depends on what your tastes are - The Walking Dead doesn’t do a thing for me, for instance.

When were you a big fan of Superman?

I’ll second Astro City.

If you like Superman I would recommend the Rebirth Superman books. The New 52 Superman was not good and is gone. This is the Superman you remember and the stories are exciting and fun.

You may already know these titles but I would recommend Fables and Y The Last Man. Both are finished so you can read complete stories. Both also run out of steam a little as they go on but are still worth reading.

Invincible is also a great comic and is about to come to an end.

I’m reading Garth Ennis’ The Boys. In a world where a sinister corporation makes the douchebaggiest supeheroes, The Boys are a CIA outfit in charge of keeping them in line.

Highly addictive.

I started reading Superman just before he died. I know perfect timing right? LOL

I read it all the way up until he became Superman Red/Blue. It wasn’t even so much that Superman Red/Blue was bad (although I don’t think it was that good), it was just a time in my life when making the weekly trip to the comic book store wasn’t suited to my life anymore.

I know sooner or later I’m bound to give Superman a try. I’m too much of a fan not too. You two are the first people to tell me that the current Superman is any good. About a dozen other people have told me if you like 90s/Naughties Superman, you will not like the current Superman.

I was a solid Superman reader during the ‘triangle number’ period where he had four titles, and honestly, current Superman is as close to that as we’ve had since. The addition of Jon Kent, son of Superman and Lois, is a breath of fresh air.

Ok, well, in that case on my next trip to the comic book store (Friday) I’ll pick it up and check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.

I forgot to mention in my initial list Rom: Spaceknight. Again a comic I read as a kid and loved. I’m digging new Rom too.
