Comic books online.

In a thread a while back, someone posted a link that had the entire Robocop vs. Terminator comic series online. I know Marvel has a lot of it’s latest comics online, but are there any other sites that have comic books for the general public’s viewing?

Probably not, due to copyright restrictions.

Check out Scott McCloud’s website. He’s a big believer in online comics.

I understand that there are indeed places where you can find entire scanned comics online, but I’m not going to tell you about them because they violate copyright and take money out of the hands of the artists who created them. If anybody does link to them, it’s going to get this thread closed just as quickly as discussions of file-sharing do.

However, if you’re interested in reading comics online, there are quite a few perfectly legal options. You know about Marvel’s Dotcomics. In a similar (but IMO more impressive) vein is CrossGen’s www.comicsontheweb.com which allows you to read essentially every one of CrossGen’s comics for $2 a month (unlimited access). I’m a big fan of CrossGen and one of the great things about it is the scope of their storyline, so having the whole thing laid out in front of you is great.

www.moderntales.com and www.serializer.net offer subscription-based access to several comics series created specifically for the web, including work by James kolchaka, Dean Haspiel, and Lea Hernandez. Lots of interesting stuff on both sites.

If you’re interested in older material, you might want to take a look at http://home.insightbb.com/~GoldenYears/Library.html or Google for Bill Nolan’s Pure Excitement Comics. Both sites offer scans of Golden Age comics which are believed to have entered the public domain. (While U.S. works created as early as the 1920’s may still be copyrighted, works created before 1979 had to be renewed after 28 years or the rights would expire; many comics published by companies which had gone out of business by then were never renewed.)
