Comics taking note of March For Our Lives

I see that both Baby Blues and Zits have special strips today to indicate their participation with today’s March For Our Lives event.

Whoa, the instant raging gun control brawls taking place in the comments for these two strips! At least in seattle pi, the website I use to read comics. I didn’t read past the first “Lord I pray you to forgive the artist for their sinful view” post.

I’m surprised that any comic strips were able to coordinate with that at all. I always thought syndicated newspaper strips were completed 4-6 weeks before they actually appear in the funny pages.

They usually are, but that doesn’t prevent a cartoonist from banging out a special strip to sub for another one if they so desire. Lots of salutes to Stephan Hawking were done that way. Ever since cartoonists started delivering their work via email rather than FedEx, this sort of thing has been much easier.

And boy were those embarrassing!

Pearls Before Swine also had one, yesterday (maybe because Pastis’ take on it required a school day).

One of the creators of Baby Blues is the guy who does Zits, so it’s likely just him and not some industry-wide coordinated effort.

Plus given that Zits is about High School teens, it makes a lot of sense to acknowledge the March.
