In one episode, Carla admits she is pregnant by her ex-husband Nick. Sam lets her leave early, and the gang at the bar–including Coach, takes up a collection for her.
What I don’t understand involves the end of the episode. Just as Carla is about to leave, Diane starts to sing the heart-wrenching song from Carousel, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Carla and Norm react as if to say, “Diane, how dare you pick that song!” But–OK, maybe I missed something here: What unspoken point is Norm (along with Carla) trying to make?
I was in a singing class several years ago, and I told the accompanist about this episode; he too winced and groaned. So just what did Norm’s and Carla’s reaction (like that of the real-life accompanist) mean?
Minor point: When Woody was with Cheers, someone would ask him if such-and-such person, like Cliff or Norm, is present. Woody asks, “Would Mr. Peterson/Mr. Clavin know what this is about?” I get the idea this was how Woody found out what the person wanted with Cliff/Norm/whomever, without even admitting the person asked for is present…
Maybe because they think the song sucks. It is one of R&H’s smarmiest.
In addition, it is hilarously inappropriate for Carla, no matter what the situation.
