Comments on having Covid

Nice. I’m on day 4 now. Never had a fever, haven’t officially taken any time off work but have been napping during the day. Cough varies; I did wake myself up coughing last night but then got back to sleep, and most of the day is spent between brief, occasional coughing spells. So far, missing Disneyland with my niece is by far the worst part.

That’s about my experience. Now it’s been 8 days since my 10 day isolation ended. I’ve been slamming it at work: 12h per day, 6d per week. No sign of weakness or low energy. Stil coughing now and again for about 10-30 seconds, and it’s a mildly gloppy cough. But otherwise I’m 100% normal.

Good luck!!

Are most people here retesting after getting it? I was told not to bother, by two doctors (my PCP and a close friend of mine). They both said, just do the 5 days isolation, 5 days masking, you’re good to go, no need to retest. So I never have, nor has anyone in my family. (And I double checked CDC guidelines, too, and none mention testing again.)

I did the 5-day retest, as much to placate my wife as anything else.

If you think about it, the CDC guidance amounts to: “If you feel OK after 5 days, go out in public w a mask. If you want, test. But if it comes back positive, stay isolated in your bedroom for another 5 days, then go out with that mask.”

Only a solitary bedroom-loving person would choose to test at day 5 since there is exactly zero upside for them to do so.

HR told me I have to either test again on day 5, or stay home the whole 10 days. They really know how to threaten a gal with a good time.

I got covid 19 on the 4th of July. While I was feeling lazy and weak throughout the day the symptoms got my in the middle of the night the morning of July 5th. I ran a fever of 100.8 and felt like I got hit by a bus. I then started pumping lots of Tylenol and vitamins in me including Vitamin D, L glutamine, Zinc, C and multi vitamins and minerals.

It pretty much lasted about 2 weeks and I had no interest in many things and all I wanted to do is rest and sleep. I had a slight running nose but nothing major. Just a fever and body aches.

Well…not infecting other people. I’d test at 5 days - why wouldn’t I? I don’t want to go out and spread disease if I’m still producing enough antigens to trigger those tests. Sure false positives are an issue, but if I kept getting those every day I’d simply go in for a more accurate test at a medical facility. In fact if I got a positive after 5 days, I’d probably wait an hour and then take another to doublecheck. Negative the second time? Time for a medical visit to confirm.

It’s not like I’m trying to trick myself (I’m just going to assume I’m great because it has been five days!). I legitimately don’t want to walk around carrying this trash. I don’t go in to work if I have a cold, either.

Or someone who doesn’t want to infect their friends.

I don’t think the CDC wants to give complicated guidance, like, “use this fussy test that you might have to pay for”. But i think it’s worth doing if you can afford it. I get tests free from my employer, and keep a few around. So I’d test.

I tested this morning (Day 10 since initial symptoms) and tested negative. At this point I plan to return to mostly normal life and no longer mask around my wife here in the house.

Day 5 and I’m pretty sure I’m on the upswing. I’m not coughing several times in a row anymore, just one cough every couple hours, and my energy is nearly back to normal. Gotta admit, I was always a bit cocky about how I’d fare against the virus, but I was expecting it to put up a little more of a fight than this. Suck on my three Moderna shots, you vile piece of DNA and protein.

I’m a day behind you in symptoms, so I’m on day 4. I’ve been on the upswing since yesterday. Still have a runny nose and scratchy throat in the morning. Pretty much goes away with coffee. Covid can suck my four Pfizers. Haw! :fu:

I’m on day 10. I isolated for 5, but have only left the house a handfuls of times (masked) after that.

My symptoms eased after day 3. It was a slight fever, body aches, runny nose, cough and fatigue. Everything is better except the fatigue. My energy level is still not good.

But for me, the worst of it is the complete loss of smell. I didn’t even notice until day 3 or 4, but it’s gone completely and I feel like I’ve lost a limb. It’s really bizarre to have clear sinuses, breathe freely, yet smell nothing. If I put a tube of toothpaste or spice container under my nose I get nothing. I really hate this, and I hope it comes back soon. How are others dealing with it?

I’m fully vaccinated and boosted, BTW. Dread to think what this might have been like without any protection.

Oh that’s interesting; I thought the loss of smell wasn’t happening so much with the new variants. I haven’t lost mine. A friend of mine who caught the original strain in December 2020 did lose taste and smell, and said it came back gradually over several weeks.

I would feel blind. I cook by smell. I know where i am by smell. I know who else is in the room by smell…

I gather that it usually comes back, but it takes a while. Nerves regrow slowly.

Uh oh. I just woke up an hour ago and can’t smell a thing. Daughter lost hers yesterday. I’m on day six. Symptoms have been very mild for days. I don’t even have a runny nose anymore. I just read that loss of smell was less common among other omicrons but seems to be back with ba.5.

best wishes recovering your sense of smell quickly.

Hey, I just smelled soy sauce!

I’ve been using my spice rack to see if anything is coming back and I thought I registered just a little bit of pepper tonight. On a whim I opened the soy sauce and I could smell it! That’s the first thing that’s come through with any clarity.

Congrats!

I remember when a friend of mine got her first successful whiff of something, back in December of 2020. She texted me excitedly, and said she was running all over the house to see what else she could smell.

Okay, this is weird. I started to smell some things again last night. The smells were muted and some were strange, but definitely there. For example, I smelled coffee beans and they had a nasty chemical smell (‘COVID smell’).

Today, I woke up not smelling anything again. But now, I can smell some things I couldn’t smell yesterday. Some I still can’t smell at all. Same with my daughter.

I honestly expected this was going to last longer. Maybe we just have some inflammation in the olfactory cleft but no actual damage. It’s not just regular nasal congestion though. Again, for some reason BA.5 seems to be causing anosmia in more people than the other Omicron variants.

I’ve had anosmia twice, both pre-covid, but after a cold. It was similar to covid in that my nose was clear, but I couldn’t smell or taste anything. It drove me nuts, but only lasted about a week each time.
