If you count people you’ve met online in “people you’ve met”, then you have now. I hate doing dishes by hand with the fire of 6.02 * 10[sup]23[/sup] suns. Mr. Neville and I have an agreement that he’ll do the rare hand washing of dishes for things like knives that shouldn’t go in the dishwasher. Give me a choice between one of the knives or pans that can’t go in the dishwasher and one that can, and I go for the one that can 100% of the time, given the choice. When I was picking a china pattern when I got married, I considered only ones that were dishwasher- and microwave-safe.
I cannot comprehend why anyone who has a perfectly good dishwasher would ever hand wash dishes, except for stuff that shouldn’t go in the dishwasher. Doing dishes by hand involves physical work (hard work, if stuff is stuck on) and possibly touching slimy gross food that has come off the dishes. I’d do it before I’d go snorkeling in raw sewage, but that’s about it.
This post sounds so familiar … It’s the old food that really grosses my husband out.
We’ve worked out a deal where he has to take out the garbage (kitchen and bathroom) and I’ll do the dishes. I HATE taking out the garbage.
This will delight you – our garbage disposal was installed by morons. The pipe runs almost horizontally, meaning that food detritus backs up into the sink almost every time we use it. Guess who gets to stick her hand in there and manually clean it out? And often, when you run the disposal stray food items shoot into the air on the other side of the sink, possibly befouling any clean dishes that happen to be in the rack.

[li]I don’t have a lawnmower. Where I live we have common yards and a lawncare and landscape maintenance company keeps everything trimmed up, paid for through association dues.[/li][li]I don’t have a Tivo or DVD recorder (except on my computer). I’m still using a VCR, which is connected to my old-fashioned CRT non-wide screen, non-HD TV. My computer monitor is also a CRT.[/li][li]I rarely drink coffee, so I don’t have a coffee maker. Come to think of it, there are a lot of common kitchen appliances I don’t have (e.g. blender, mixer, griddle, etc.)[/li][li]I have no dedicated video game consoles and I only play a few games on my PC.[/li][li]I don’t have any house plants, not even fake ones that I wouldn’t have to water.[/li][li]No beer or any alcoholic beverages. I’m not a Mormon or other strong religious devotee. I just see no need for alcoholic drinks.[/li][li]Nothing patently feminine (no feminine hygiene products, clothes, makeup, etc.) since I am a single guy and only live with my brother.[/li][/ul]
Forgot to mention another common thing that I don’t have:
Caller ID, call-waiting, call-forwarding and any of those other features the phone company wants to sell. It’s just copper wire with dial tone and DSL for us.
Speaking of phones, another common thing that I don’t have a lot of is touch-tone phones. Most of our phones are rotary dial, but I keep one touch-tone phone in the office so I can connect with conference lines for work and order prescription refills.
Neither my wife nor I have a credit card. If we don’t have the money for it, we don’t need it. God knows we have every-damn other thing under the sun though. There are days I dream of a house without horizontal surfaces, thus no spaces for accumulating junk …
No TV or VCR (DVD-RW in the computer, though)
No car (or license to drive one)
No toaster
No blender
No landline
No even remotely recent gaming consoles (there’s an NES in storage somewhere)
No coffeemaker
No dishwasher (I’d put one in, if my kitchen were laid out for it), just recently bought ice cube trays, but haven’t put them in the freezer. No garage-door opener. (unless you count me.)
No:
cell phone
coffee maker
spare bed/air mattress
iron or ironing board
garage, though oddly I DO have a garage door opener
video game system
washer or dryer
DVR or Tivo
Technically I have a dishwasher, since it was there when I bought the house, but I never use it. I hardly ever use the disposer that’s in one sink, either.
No coffee maker, since I don’t drink coffee.
No toaster, just because I’m not much of a toast person.
No video game system, since I don’t play them.
No car, or license.
No Facebook, etc, although the other day a friend was telling me that I really should get one. She didn’t say why, although I suspect it’s part of her plot to get me re-socialized, since I’ve a bit of a hermit.
I’m still living with my parents, but I’m moving out in a couple months, and I’m not going to have a landline or a TV. All the TV shows I watch can be watched for free online, so I’m just going to get a second monitor for more efficient multitasking. I don’t drink coffee, so I won’t have a coffee maker. I don’t have a car because I’m a shitty driver (I have my license, but they shouldn’t have passed me).
