I’m interested in finding a back 40 (feet) of gardening space near me - what’s the right term for that?
Googling on “community gardening” just gives me assisted living facilities .

Searching the whole world for a plot next to you seems a little overkill. You did not mention your circumstances, but I assume you do not have a back yard. Spot an empty piece of ground next to you, and ask the owner if he will let you garden it for a cut of the crop. The worst than can happen is they will look at you like you are an idiot and say no, so then go home and have a drink to their early demise, and try someplace else. I have a modest garden 10 ft by 24ft. We talk to our neighbors (We live on a corner so three yards abut) and we plan what we each will grow, then share. This year I am growing mostly green beans, a few bell peppers and carrots. Brian is doing tomatoes and cucumbers, Tim is doing peas and more tomatoes, with a side of onions thrown in. Then we just share. Everyone takes care of thier own garden,so it is not really community gardening, but it works for us. Good luck and good eating.
I just did a story on community gardening in a city, so maybe I can help. The local county ag extension may be your best bet. Also local garden clubs sometimes sponsor community gardens, so try Googling a list of garden clubs in your area.
Larger cities usually have organized groups that do these, but smaller towns are also getting into the community garden spirit. Good luck.
I don’t know where exactly Glenview is, but I found four in Chicago. That same site has a mailing list you can ask questions of, as well.
Thanks…
Depending on your circumstances, container gardening might also be worth checking out.

You can try calling the Glenview city hall. Even if they aren’t involved in local community gardens, they may know where they are.
Or, there is the Glenview Gardeners at http://glenview.northstarnet.org/gardens/index.html
Thanks, everyone. I did more searching and found St. Peter’s Community Church on Willow Road (boundary between Glenview and Northbrook). Left a message, but I think that’ll be my answer.
