Thankfully the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has not been affected by the shutdown; the only other time I had to use them they were. The first time, a bank manager for BofA kept refusing to seen a cashiers check to the credit card processing department so I could get a secured credit card. Always an excuse of why it was never done. I finally filed a complaint with the CotC and within a week got a letter from the district manager apologizing and assuring me that the check was going to be given back to me and exchanged for cash at the branch the next day. Oh, and clearly they were going to train the manager. I went in the day after I got the letter and wouldn’t you know it, the manager had my check on her desk (it was never sent) and the best part was how pissed she was.
This second time I wrote about in another thread. Our mortgage lender bank had funds from some escrow account 3 years ago. I dealt with them in mid-July and they insisted they would reissue the check. After the required waiting period of 8 weeks, I called, we haven’t gotten the check. Wait longer was their reply. I called back mid October.
Pause for a second. This was the third phone call. Do you know how many times I had to verify my address? At least 3 or 4 times per phone call. They were ready to reissue the check again which involve waiting 6 weeks for the stop payment on the previous one. Then she said wait, let me see something …
“What is your address?”
“It is still 123 E Fake Street.” (hear the frustration at again repeating my address)
“Oh, we’ve been sending it to 12 Fake Street.”
“Is that a fucking joke?”
“Don’t use that language with me!” click
Wife called the next day as I did not trust myself to have a constructive conversation with them. Yes, wait 6 weeks for the stop payment then we pinky promise that we will send it to the right address this time. So I filed a complaint with the CotC on their overall incompetence and that it would be yet another two month wait based on their error. Three days later we got an email from someone in the bank’s corporate office. They would take personal charge of the case and we would have the check within a week. It was delivered via FedEx overnight on the 6th day.
