Compulsive gambling (esp. in the UK)

I know someone who appears to have a gambling problem.

There was a big incident ~35 years ago. Then he apparently stopped, although it might be just that he didn’t have the time for anything other than weekend gambling.

Since he retired, he’s started again in a big way. £40k ($70k) in one year, apparently on slot machines. That’s about double his final salary (before tax). He’s also claimed that he’s only been gambling for 3 months, but he’s thrown all his old statements. He’s been separated for a week from his wife while they figure out what to do next and claimed that he stopped 3 weeks before that. However, she’s just walked into his old haunt and caught him there (although naturally he’s saying that it’s the first time that he’s been there since he gave up).

So, how should his immediate family deal with this problem?

Are there any UK specific options for help. I’ve already found Gamblers Anonymous.
