Computer Cookies

I had a serious problem with my computer the other day. I got some help, but the guy disabled all of my cookies. Now I can’t remember passwords or user names or anything else and I can’t log into websites. There is only one that is really important for me to get into right now.

Can I bring the cookie back for that one only ?

How ?

Thanks.

If he deleted the cookies, they’re gone. If you’ve got something like Norton Utilites that has an Undelete applet, you can try undeleting the files in your C:\windows\cookies folder, but that might not work. Most sites with password access have “Forgot Password” links you can use. They’ll either email the current passowrd to the email address you used when you registered, or take you to a page to set a new one, after verifying some information.

The page I have to go has something like that, but it keeps asking for my user name and I can’t remember it at all. It just keeps saying that my information is invalid.

I don’t believe I have that other thing, I did find a folder that says cookies and it says something about the site I need to get to, but I don’t know what to do with that.

It might me an older cookie from that site. Try opening it with notepad. If you’re lucky, it contains your username unencrypted and you can take it from there.

YES, YES ! There is something on notepad about that cookie ! It say cookie OK and a lot of other letters and things, but what do I do with it ?

If you can’t read anything that looks like your username, then it’s probably encrypted or uses a lookup code, or something, so you’re out of luck with that route. It was a long shot anyway. I’d suggest writing to support at the site you need to get in and telling them the situation.

I guess I’ll have to do that then.

Thanks anyway Q.E.D.

You Rock.

No problem.

Try moving all but the desired cookie from the cookies folder to another folder. Enable cookies. You may need to close and reopen IE. Revisit website.

Here’s another long shot: *Sometimes websites pass your username and password in the URL when you change pages using something like this:

http://www.theurl.com/securepage.php&username=“username”&password=“password”

Look at your History on a day before the work was done on your computer for the site you want (assuming it’s intact), and see if you see a URL that resembles that. Again, it’s a long shot, but hey.
