Computer game with no CD or DVD?

Don’t know if this belongs here or not, but I just opened a game I bought today and there’s no DVD in the box. The packaging seemed fine and the documentation, catalog, and coupon is all there, but no game.

In all my years of buying games I’ve never had this happen. What will GameStop say when I return the game without a game. Advice?

They should give you another copy of the game (and make sure it’s in the box).

If not, raise a big stink with the manager.

Thanks much.

That’s my plan of attack, but I can’t say I’m real optimistic about raising a stink on Black Friday. And I’m afraid I’m going to have to raise a stink.

I guess what I’m really asking is if anyone has had this situation happen before and what the results were.

I bought a DVD once and got it home to discover there was no DVD inside. Took it back to the store and got another one. I was fully expecting to have a problem - it’s a hard thing to prove - but I didn’t. With the advent of burners and such, people are more likely to just burn a copy and try to return the original, not return the (empty) original and get another original.

Oh and speaking from experience (long ago) as a customer service desk person, Black Friday is the best day to raise a stink, because they’re really not going to feel like arguing with you, and the sound of cash registers ringing merrily is likely to put management in a fairly decent (if harried) mood, and render them more cooperative.

IME. YMMV.

Thank you. I didn’t think of it from a “happy management day” standpoint. I’m starting to feel a little relief.

I’m also thinking that this is really in the wrong forum. My apologies to the mods if this is so.

Speaking form the other side of the counter (years ago), I can say it happens. More often than you might think. These things are assembled by machines, and they sometimes miss a part. You shouldn’t have a problem, if the person at the counter has been working there for any significant amount of time, they will have seen this before.
It gets fun when you have *really *messed up errors. I’ve the wrong CD inside jewel cases, software in an audio case, and the best was the few times a CD was printed on the wrong disc; for an entire production run! So you’d buy, say, Celine Dion. Get home, the packaging is right, the disc itself is even printed correctly. You play it, and it’s the Best of Blondie or something.

Those are fun!

And that’s a bad thing?

On Sunday I went out and got the last Xbox HD kit. Came home and found that someone had switched the HD kit with the “Advanced AV” kit. I went back last night and had it switched with little problem.

I also once bought a Costco DVD (Rush Hour 2) and found nothing inside. The women at the customer service desk took a long look at me (I was showing my innocent confused face) and she refunded the DVD (I immediately bought it again).

Serveral years ago I once bought a game CD that was missing the CD key. Eb World replaced it.

You shouldn’t have a problem.

You should be fine.

An improvement over Celine Dion, that’s for sure.

An empty case would have been, too.

A friend of mine who is a musician had just released a CD of mellow instrumental music and sold a bunch of them at an art fair. Shortly thereafter they started coming back with notes saying, “Um, this isn’t what I thought it would be . . .” Turns out the production house had burned a batch of my friend’s CDs with one track only – of some cheesy patriotic country song (this was not too long after 9/11. Gag. I consider my copy of one of the bad ones a collectible.

I once bought an REO Speedwagon album that had a Johhny Paycheck album in it. Go figure.

They gave me a new one no questions asked.

Back 1986 or '87, when the Beatles first four albums were scheduled to be released, some guy bought a Kate Bush CD. The packaging AND the disc were marked correctly, but the music was from one the not-yet-released Beatles album. He took it back and requested an exhange!

Only a few were released like that. It’s become quite the collectible.

A few years ago a friend of mine bought me a Beck CD at Borders. When I opened it, the CD inside was Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera or something like that. So I took it back to the store, and the guy at the customer service counter at first seemed confused, but looked around and eventually found the Beck CD in the store CD changer. Apparently they had used it as a store copy, then packaged it back up for sale, but got the wrong disc in there.

The good news: it was replaced with no problem at all. In fact, the manager-type guy I talked to just about gushed apologies. Even better, the game is awesome.

I guess I just panic easily (well, $50 is $50).

Thanks to everyone for all the advice and well wishes.

What game was it, anyway?

Sid Meier’s Pirates! This is the shiny new version of the old classic.

Oooh I’m so jealous!! I want that in the worst way!
