Computer Network Wonkiness

I don’t know what is going on with the network at my job, but they’ve definitely been going through a very rough patch of wonkiness recently.

Part of my job involves working with an Access database, a copy of which is kept on my desktop - in Access 97. The SysAdmin of the db doesn’t want to convert it to a more recent version (I’m not certain why, but he has his reasons). When changes come in, I make them on the shared copy on my desktop, then they are posted to the Internet later on. This had worked fine until Wednesday - I opened up the db and it asked me if I wanted to convert it to Access 2002!

Unfortunately for me, the db sysadmin is on vacation (and then official travel) until after Labor Day, so I called our Help Desk and explained the problem to them. They wrote out a ticket and said someone would be down to help me later.

That was around 8 AM; I called back at 11 AM to make sure that my ticket was still in the queue (it was). I still couldn’t get into the db (it was still asking me to convert it), and I had a small pile of changes to put in, since I had been out sick on Tuesday.

Finally, around 2 PM or so, I was able to access the Access 97 version on my desktop without a conversion message! About 10 minutes later, someone from the Help Desk called and asked me if I still needed help with that. Supressing a laugh, I explained that it was working okay now, and asked him if he had come down while I was at lunch. His reply? “No … but if it’s working okay now, can I close out the ticket?” Unexplained wonkiness!
