You see how that Epson print properties window is chopped off at the right and bottom? Normally, one would just enlarge the window by pulling the left and bottom borders out. No can do. It won’t let me. The window size is fixed, and the information underneath is bigger than the window. There’s no way to get at it.
This only happens on certain windows. I’ve also noticed it during software installations. What is going on here, and how can I fix it? Or, if you don’t know, what’s a good messageboard to ask this question?
Hmm. I don’t know about that particular problem, but I’ve only ever found two ways to address similar issues. One is to have the proper video card drivers installed and to set the screen resolution higher. The other is to use the “small icons” settings in Windows’ “Display Properties”. Or maybe it is leaving “use large icons” unchecked.
I had a nearly identical problem (also Epson software, under Win 98) which I fixed by chanign the default system font size. Right-click your desktop, and click Properties then click the Appearance tab. What you have to do next depends on which OS you use. Under XP, click the Advanced button, and select Message box, then change the font size to a smaller value. Fiddling with this ought to produce acceptable results.
I believe the problem is caused by the display theme being used - try switching to the Windows default theme, and see if that solves it. If so, AFAIK the only workaround is to use a different theme.
Darn. That didn’t do it either. It’s driving me nuts!! All other graphics seem to display fine. Games work fine.
Other info:
I use a dual monitor set-up. I turned it off just to see if it would make any difference but, alas, no. The primary monitor is a ViewSonic A70, set at 1024 x 768 resolution. I tried playing with the resolution…It doesn’t make any difference.
Any ideas where else I can look for help?
Have you tried contacting Epson tech support directly? I looked for a user’s group message board, but haven’t found one. And the FAQs on the site for that printer doesn’t mention your problem. Is there a contact URL or email in the literature that came with the unit?
Good suggestion. But before you di that, have you checked Epson’s site to see if they have updated sotware for your printer and OS? You don’t need the drivers, per se; you only need the control panel, but I don’t know if that comes separately or is only available bundled. Make sure you aren’t getting only the drivers, though.
It’s not just the Epson print driver that has this problem. This is why I don’t think it’s an Epson problem.
Like I said before, certain installation screens do the same. At the moment, I remembr the same problem when installing Adobe software. There was a page of registration/user agreements I couldn’t scroll to or read. Luckily, I found I could Tab to the “I accept” button, but could not read all the text. And there’s some other windows which I’m forgetting at the moment.
I’ve had this problem with Comcast when I go to their computer to read my emails instead of downloading them. No problem, since I can always go to my email, but if I’m using a different computer (like one at the library), I don’t have that option. I get the Comcast website OK, but when I click on “email,” the email comes up at the lower right and I can’t re-size it. I figure it’s just a computer glitch on Comcast’s part.
I’m using Netscape and Windows XP, and I’ve had this happen a couple of times. The first time I almost went nuts before I managed to fix the problem. I was able to make things right again by finding a pop-up window (similar to the one in your screen shot) that had a scroll bar at the side. I maximized that window and then closed it. That fixed things for me.
In my case, when it happened a second time later, I decided the problem resulted from me minimizing a window and then closing it without restoring it first. I fixed it the same way I did the first time and have taken pains since then not to close any windows while they are minimized. YMMV, of course. Good luck!
I thought for sure Q.E.D. had it. These problems are usually caused when the developer does not scale the fields in a dialog box properly. The program looks great on their system, but fails when the program runs on a computer with large fonts or a different Windows theme.
So in the spirit of offering more things to check, double-check the system font size: Right-click the desktop, select properties, select the Appearance tab, and check the Font Size field on the lower-left. Make sure it is set to normal. This is a different font-size than the one Q.E.D. suggested above.
If you are still stuck, you might try rebooting after setting the system font-size, the message-box font size, and the Windows theme. Or you could try rebooting in safe mode. But these suggestions are really stretching…
