Computer question: IE saves JPGs as .jpe

A computer question for the Teeming Millions.

On my computer here at work, I have both Netscape (4.79) and IE (6.0.2800) installed.

When I right-click on a JPEG picture in Netscape and save it, it saves as .jpg, and when I later want to open it, I double-click on it and Microsoft Photo Editor opens it; no problem.

When I right-click on a picture in IE and save it, for some reason it saves as .jpe, and when I later want to open it, I double-click on it and Microsoft Photo Editor announces that it’s an unknown file format. This saving as .jpe just started happening in the last three months or so. Pretty lame, if you ask me.

I can rename the file as a .jpg, and after assuring Windows that yes, I really do want to change the filename extension (sigh), Photo Editor will open the file just fine.

Is there any setting I can tweak in IE that makes it save JPEGs as .jpg? I’m happy with Photo Editor as a viewer. Our local computer support person “solved” the problem by downloading some shareware for a free thirty-day trial period; the shareware took forever to open and was generally unsatisfactory, so when the month expired, I uninstalled it.

Assuming you are running Windows XP:

One thing you can do is set the file associations for the .JPE files so that your photo editor will always open it. There are a couple of ways of doing this. One is to right click the .JPE file and choose Open With > Choose Program > and pick your program, making sure to check the “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” box.

Or, you can open any folder, click Tools > Folder Options > File Types > New. Type in the JPE extension, and select a program to associate with that extension.

Thanks for the input.

I’ve tried the associations bit, setting things so that Photo Editor is the default opener for .jpe, but Photo Editor doesn’t know what to do with a .jpe file.

Well, you can always write a batch file that renames all .jpe files to .jpg. If you’re saving large groups of files at a time, you can grab a bunch, run the script, and then have your .jpg files.

I imagine you’ve tried appending .jpg to the end of the file name when you’re saving the image?

Oh, are you saying that you’re trying to open it from within Photo Editor, and it won’t recognize the file, rather than just double-clicking it on the desktop? Hmm… I don’t know what to tell you then, other than to rename your files.

Thanks for all your replies.

I can (and have) typed in “.jpg” as I was saving the file, which works fine. But I’d rather not have to do that; I’m a crummy and not very fluent typist.

As to running batch files, I have no more idea of how to do that than to produce beans out of my ear… …But if I were downloading massive numbers of files, I’m sure there’s someone here at the World’s Second Best-Selling Commercial Jet Airplane Company who could show me how.

How comfortable are you, with editing your registry?
I’ve had to do this to re-associate. Perhaps it will work for you?

Sonuva gun, it works! You are the Man! Thank you!

Umm. What worked for you?

The link Daizy supplied gave instructions to edit the registry. I followed the instructions in the link; sure 'nuff, something that should have been “.jpg” was “.jpe”. So I changed it and it seems to work fine now; IE saves JPEGs as “.jpg”

Well, that’s fabulous! So glad you got it sorted!
