Saving Photos

How come whenever I right-click on a photo and select Save Picture As, and then save it to My Pictures (in MS Word 2000 running on Windows Me), all I get when I try to bring it up later is stuff like

µ } !1A Qa"q 2‘¡ #B±Á RÑð$3br‚

Dozens of killer photos I thoght I’d saved over the past year turned out to be this code stuff instead. Is it because I change the name to a title I’ll remember?

Thanx

Could you tell us what the file format is for the photos that you are trying to save?

As a general rule (this may not apply to your problem), you may need to select the file format that you save in…this is a choice in the window that appears when you save files.

Please give us some more information so that we may be of more help.

What is the extension of the file it is being saved as? I suspect it’s not being saved with the correct file name extension, and hence they are being loaded by something other than a graphic file viewer.

Ok, thank you. I right-clicked on a photo at a web site and clicked Save Photo As, and the File name it presented was capt.xpch13809150327, and the Save as type was JPEG (.jpg) as the default. Or one could click on the dropdown arrow and select the other choice, which was Bitmap (.bmp). I really have no clue what these designators mean, although I have heard the term JPEG a lot. I left it as JPEG. But I wasn’t too crazy about that file name, so I changed the file name to something meaningful (just regular words). When I went to retrieve the photo, it was converted to gibberish. Should I have saved it as “Vinny and Marty.jpg” for example, instead of just “Vinny and Marty”? How is one to know this–besides forever losing dozens and dozens of awesome photos before suddenly realizing it and then asking the SDMB, I mean?

Still attempting to sprout a seedling of a clue,
h

This just in. Now going back to the same site and clicking on the same photo, the file name comes up as “untitled”, and the only choice for save as type is bitmap (.bmp). JPEG is gone. Renaming with .bmp at the end of the name (and with .jpg) and attempting to save the photo both produced much gibberish.

Maybe there is a simple method of saving photos from e-mail or web sites in My Pictures that allows one to retrieve and view or print them later…?

When you go to save as, you can usually type a new name, if you like.

For example, I click on the banner here, that says, “tsdbanner” as the name, and GIF under “Save as file type”. If I wanted to, I could save that picture, and type in the Name area, “Superhappyfunbanner”.

If you change the name, you shouldn’t have to add “.jpg”, it should be there automatically. Of course, maybe it’s putting spaces in the name, that does it? Perhaps “vinnyandmarty” is better?

I tried saving it as vinnyandmarty, and it worked–but something weird happened. When I go to My Pictures now and double click on that name, I get the gibberish. But if I go back to the web site and right-click on the photo of vinnyandmarty again and select Go to My Pictures instead of Save picture as, there the photo is in Thumbnail size! And double clicking it brings it to full size. So now the question becomes, how can I access this photo again directly from My Pictures, rather than finding in online in the future? I tried changing the View from the List option to the Thumbnails, but I’m not able to make those Thumbnails appear just by going into My Documents and clicking My Pictures–only by right-clicking on a photo and selecting Go to My Pictures.

(Wish I’d thought to check this out yesterday when my computer guy was here for two hours.)

Clear your cache. IE converts jpegs to bitmaps when your cache is full and you try to save them.

Hm, why are you in a word processing program trying to save picture? Maybe I am missing something here, but when I save a picture from online, and i am in my browser [netscape fwiw] all I do is right click on the picture, select ‘save image as’ and type in a new file name if i need to, and tell it where to save my new image [usually a specific file on my desktop rather than in my documents] Am I missing something and you are trying to save it in a word document?

It’s possible that you may be able to salvage these old pics yet. Try appending “.jpg” to the end (without the quotes), and if that doesn’t work, try appending “.bmp” and see if that works. If it doesn’t work, no harm done.
