Computer won't install DirectX upgrade

I got an early Christmas present…technically it was a Christmas present to me from me. Chessmaster 9000.

Currently I have DirectX 8.0 installed on my computer. The game requires version 8.1 in order to use the 3D chessboard.

During installation, it persistently stalled when installing DirectX 8.1.

I went online to Microsoft’s website get a DirectX upgrade from another source, and found that DirectX 9.0 was available. Sounds good, except I’m running into the same problems…at some point during the upgrade, it persistently stalls, and never finishes the installation. I’ve tried both the online installation as well as the installation from the complete download.

Any ideas why? My computer specs are definitely capable of handling this upgrade, and it’s running Windows ME.

Not a lot on failed installs in the KB

I found one article that may or may not help:

The other thing I notice is that you need 65-80MB of free HD space. Any chance your HD is full?

what are your comp specs?

deathawk’s link was the answer. I wouldn’t have believed it…a Microsoft Knowledge Base document that actually fixed the problem. I’ve been let down so many times by the KB that I gave up on it a long time ago.

Thanks!
