Anyone else watching this? First half was a bit wild, score is 2-2 at halftime.
So it’s okay to kick Adu in the head but if Donovan trips a Mexican player it’s a yellow?
Ref missed Moreno’s tap dancing on Adu’s dead apparently.
The Mexican ref missed the Mexican player kicking Adu? I’m so shocked.
USA has 10 fouls to Mexico’s 2.
Because Mexico came ready for a diving competition.
Why is Mexico getting the benefit of the doubt when it comes to getting cards?
Moved Cafe Society --> the Game Room.
Why does the broadcast say HD when it not being carried in HD in my area?
Weelllll, the announcer said it best: “too much naive play from the U.S.”
The ref was from El Salvador, by the way.
You can’t blame the refs for this. The defensive play was awful, in particular Bornstein.
Well, to be fair, our midfield was overall the most disappointing in my opinion (some real communication errors it looked like), but the defensive blunders were inexcusable. Also, Dempsey played like an idiot for some reason.
Howard had a poor game as well. Bornstein, however, had the worst game I’ve ever seen a professional have. If Cherundolo doesn’t get hurt, the US wins that game. That being said, Mexico is a good team. There’s no shame in losing.
Bigsoccer is worthless after a big win or loss, so I’m glad for this thread.
Timothy Chandler isn’t cap tied for the US yet, correct? The US is really really weak at outside back, although I liked Lichaj. Going to need some people to step up at centet back before 2014 too.
Adu looked fantastic. Good job Freddy, way to work hard on both sides of the ball. He played the easy passes when he needed to too. I’m very happy with his performance in this tournament.
Lots of talk about Bradley Sr. being fired over this, but really, what could he have done? Invent a left back? Make sure Howard doesn’t crap the bed today? Still don’t like keeping coaches around more than one cycle.
I stand corrected. The reffing was still better than your average MLS game.
Well, Mexico proved themselves to be the best team in CONCACAF. Pretty convincingly too. The goal by Dos Santos was amazing, and it capped off a wonderful offensive display. Mexico’s style is always fun to watch.
On defense, Mexico was a bit shaky, and those two goals by the US could easily have been 4, even with the US’s relative lack of opportunities. I’m pretty amazed at Freddy Adu, I missed his last game so I was still under the impression he was not on the US team, yet he had a career game and really tore up the Mexican defense. Cherundolo was a big loss but Mexico lost Salcido and Marquez pretty early as well, I’d call it a wash. Mexico was a little more theatrical in its falling than the US was, but Jones was really bucking for a red card there and I don’t think it affected that much anyway.
I don’t think Howard (who looks like Vin Diesel) had a bad game, he just had terrible support and a couple of unlucky bounces. Bornstein was beaten constantly. Bradley scored a goal yet was supremely disappointing. Has no one suggested nepotism for him, at all? Donovan was his typical speedy self, I guess.
Chicharito played great despite not getting a goal or too much of the ball.
Mexico MOTM - Gio Dos Santos
US MOTM - Freddy Adu
I agree Adu showed some real heart in his performance.
I hate to say it, but overall I think the better side won.
Oh, it’s suggested constantly.
It’s completely ridiculous though. Bradley Jr. has been one of the best US players for the past 4 years. He was the US’s best player at the World Cup (IMO, although Donovan, Dempsey, and Cherundolo also had very good tournaments). He didn’t have a strong Gold Cup, I’ll grant. I think he’s out of shape, having not played much at Aston Villa.
I don’t know how you could say Howard didn’t have a good game. He was poor on all 4 goals. Poor positioning and bad control of the ball. Very disappointing.
I’d say Cherundolo was a bigger loss than Mexico’s injuries because we have no depth at that position. Bornstein was worthless, as you noted.
I realized what bugged me about this game. The game may as well have been played in Mexico City for all the support the US had there. The same thing happened at the the friendly against Spain.
This is pretty much standard for all US vs Mexico games in the US. From what I understand, the US plays important qualifiers in Columbus because they can sometimes get a majority of US fans. At the 2007 Gold Cup final in Chicago it was probably 85/15 for Mexico. This game seemed like 95/5 though.
That’s what bugs me, that this is standard. I hope one day we beat them at Azteca.
