There are also issues like far too many people who should know don’t know a fact like “casein” is a protein from milk and should not be consumed by people with a dairy allergy or intolerance. I would not want to rely on an app programmer to know that sort of thing for everything.

Well, if you were creating an app for this, you wouldn’t have to rely on a programmer for that decision.
I can do OK with individual meals that do not include animal flesh (yes, I’m a realist about that, and have no ethical issue with human participation in the food chain), such as cottage cheese and a piece of fruit or a PBJ, but my body demands protein when I’m unwell or seriously stressed (which is my normal condition, but that’s a side issue), and animal-based proteins, especially meat, are the simplest and most cost-effective solution (both in money and time).
I tend to take the view that if my body is demanding a specific food, there’s something in that food it knows it needs, so I should pay attention. I’m fortunate enough to not have food allergies myself, but do cook for a diabetic husband, so I appreciate the reminder upthread that low-fat options would be worse for him due to higher carbs. We’re not so worried about higher calories in his case, since he’s a bit underweight for a 5’9" male in his mid/late 50s at 135-140 lb.
