Concurrent Doper Diplomacy

Webpage is up!
Spring orders due Tuesday, Feb 1

Woot, I named another Dip game.

Good luck, everyone.

Woohoo! Nice web page Weirddave - it has wavy flags and everything! I was a bit undecided about joining an email Diplomacy game. Now I am so pleased I did. Even if everything goes tits up, I will have enjoyed the email banter that has already developed. Thanks again for running it for us. And to you Wikkit for starting the thread!

Just as a note- I’ll be out of town this weekend, so don’t send anything that demands a reply by Sunday. I’ll be back on Monday, and ready to write and scheme.

Wait, did I say ‘scheme’? I meant ‘plan for a peaceful co-existence with all neighbors.’

And I agree with Courgette- the banter has been marvelous. Though the defeaning silence from certain areas of the board…

The suspense is killing me!

Results can be found here, click the Spring 01 box in the “Game History” table on the right hand side of the page.

It does not work for me. It says somthing about contacting the web master or somesuch.

Well, it works for me on 2 different computers with 3 different browsers, so I dunno what to tell ya. Anyone else having a problem?

This is what I get when I click on Spring 01:

I hope it is not just me. ::crosses fingers::

Works for me. Interesting set of moves. You bounced with France in Burgundy, took Denmark and moved A Berlin to Kiel successfully. Try refreshing the page it might help. (You are Germany, right?)

Yep, Germany. That is weird. I tried refreshing and everything. Same message. Then I tried Firefox, and it worked. Then I tried IE again, and now it too is working. Huh? Oh well, it is all good.

Oh yeah, I mostly use Mozilla, only IE when I have to for something. I hadn’t thought of that. Was this your first result ever? Excited? Invigorated? Paranoid?

Interesting start there with France, England and Germany. Austria and Italy don’t look to be friends anytime soon, but at least neither has major early threats from anywhere else. Perhaps they’ll bludgeon each other over the head while everyone else progresses? Turkey and Russia a little too early to tell.

Dave, I like that you show both the orders and results on your map. Very nice touch. You’ve always been one for the details.

Heh. I was paranoid beforehand. Then I was quietly content. Now I am paranoid again.

You realize that this is exactly as it’s supposed to be, correct?

It’s not paranoia when they are out to get you.

I guess, yeah :). It is so cool that the game has been so successful, and seems to work so well, despite being based on a real map of Europe. It would seem that a topologically symmetrical map would be the obvious board, but that would detract from the specific strategies that each country can adopt and the game variety that ensues. It is amazing that each country has a good (if not even) chance of winning despite the disparate start positions.

There are variant maps where each starting power is in a topologically equivalent postition, but most maps are made to look more ‘real’. However, note that exactly where you place the province borders can change things a great deal, especially the sea boundaries.

Some countries in the standard map have better positions, others have worse, some have neutral centers easily available, others don’t. Like Italy. England and Turkey are “safe” positions, but are harder to expand from. Etc.

Danke. (Sorry, I’m playing Germany in the World Masters tournament. :D)

So… are we getting results today?

(Quitting smoking and waiting for Diplomacy results are not two matters than go hand in hand.)

Bitte. Und so weiter. Wie geht’s dir im Weltmeisterturnier?

I am waiting for one final set of orders, then I’ll adjudicate. Emails have been dispatched.
